Hi Tina, I am here to share with you the types of damp proof courses used in construction. Being in the same line, I can tell you that the types include Bitumen roll, slates cement mortar and more.

What are the Types of Damp Proof Course Materials?

  1. Bitumen Roll: This is a petroleum-based hydrocarbon. This consists of a thin layer of non-viscous material made up of a waterproof hessian cloth base. Here, a thin layer of copper or lead foil is used for added protection.

  2. Slates and cement mortar: This is constructed through a double layer of slates in cement mortar. Mortar can be made up of clean sand and Portland cement in the ratio of 2:1 and any slate type can be used.

  3. Mastic Asphalt: For this damp-proof course, a high temperature which is enough to melt natural asphalt is needed. Pure bitumen is added to this heated asphalt till a workable consistency is gained. The material is spread on the wall afterwards.

I hope you are now aware of the types of damp proofing.

It is imperative to install a damp proof course, especially at the basement level or at the building's foundation when it is being built. It stops moisture from rising through the walls and flooring. The best approach to safeguard your house is to install a damp-proof course. It functions as a barrier to prevent moisture from rising from the ground. When I was planning to install damp proofing in my house, I enquired how many types of damp proofing in construction?

What are the types of damp proof course?

  • Damp Proof Course (DPC) Injection:

This damp-proof course is installed by injecting a cream or liquid into the wall. In order to prevent water from rising above the DPC level, it repels water from the ground. Drilling holes in the wall is necessary to inject the chemical. The substance has a silicon base and is frequently used in masonry projects.

  • Electro-Osmotic Damp Proofing Course:

The electro-osmotic DPC type is an additional option. It works well if the wall is constructed of substantial rubble stone. Using a strong electric charge, this damp treatment drives the water back to the ground.  An electro-osmotic DPC system is most likely to be beneficial for older and heritage buildings.

  • Damp-proof membrane:

To safeguard your property from any dampness difficulties, the damp-proof course must be installed. The concrete slab has a damp-proof membrane put underneath it. It makes the concrete dry by preventing moisture from penetrating into it. The walls should not have been completed or plastered before using this proofing method.

  • Pressure grouting:

This damp-proof course technique fills any fractures in the building by mixing sand, cement, and water. It is because grout is not spread via the crevices, it differs from mortar. The grout needs to be poured under great pressure in order to fill large fractures.  This kind of damp-proof course is effective when mending hardened concrete or increasing the bearing capacity.

  • Cavity wall damp proof course:

A damp proof course for cavity walls can be installed for insulation. It functions to maintain an uninterrupted air gap between the two parallel walls. The wall is tied with metal to maintain the necessary space that will keep the area dry. However, occasionally moisture gathers in the space between the two walls, which finally causes dampness.

  • Chemical damp-proof course:

This damp-proofing method involves injecting a substance that repels water. It does this by building a vertical or horizontal barrier to stop moisture from moving. A chemical damp proof course is required, if the existing DPC has deteriorated, causing moisture to rise and seep into the construction.

I hope this answer suffices your query about how many types of damp proofing in construction? I hope this helps:)
