My mother and I recently shifted to Delhi. My father’s been here for around 4 years so he told us to be mindful about the water usage as only a limited amount of water is provided as free. He told us how much unit of water is free in Delhi, and also explained the charges for disconnection. Consumers who are exceeding the limit are supposed to pay as per the applicable tariff.
How Many Water Units are Free in Delhi?
According to Delhi Jal Board (DJB), consumption of water is free up to only 20 KL, and this benefit is only applicable to consumers who have functional metres. Apart from this, I also learned that DJB charges water and sewerage development fees from unauthorised/regularised colonies. This is, however, not applicable to villages and bonafide residents of the extended area of the village under Lal Dora. Besides, I found from DJB's official website that if you fail to pay the water charges or apply for a disconnection, there are some nominal fees per connection.
Disconnection of Water Connection on Request from Consumers |
Within 15 days on Deposit of Disconnection Fee of Rs. 250/- Per Connection. |
Disconnection due to non-payment |
Rs. 100 per connection |
Disconnection from Ferrule |
Rs. 1000 per connection |
Opening fee for new water connection |
Rs. 100 per connection |
My father also mentioned some basic rules regarding proper utilisation and consumption of water, which I have listed below for your reference.
Never use booster pumps directly on service pipes as this can lead to contamination of water.
Water lines are not supposed to pass through sewer manholes or open drains.
One shouldn’t use water from damaged hydrants.
I hope you find this answer on how many units free in Delhi Jal Board useful.

I have been residing in Delhi for the last 6 years and during this period I have been enjoying free water in my apartment. But last month I had to pay a huge amount as a water bill. So, I called a friend and asked him about it and he told me that I might have exceeded the free water limit. Then, I asked him how much water is free in Delhi do we get?
How Many Litres of Water is Free in Delhi?
My friend said that the free water limit per month in Delhi is 20KL. If I happen to exceed that, then I need to pay the whole amount to the officials. After that, he shared a tariff structure for monthly residential consumption.
Monthly Consumption (KL) | Service Charge (Rs.) | Volumetric Charges (Rs. per KL) |
Up to 20 |
146.41 |
5.27 |
20-30 |
219.62 |
26.36 |
Above 30 |

43.93 |
And that is how many litres of water is free in Delhi. He also suggested that I keep checking the meter to keep track of the amount of water that I consume every month.
I hope this information about how much water is free in Delhi has been of help to you.
