He explained how to calculate the total wall area from which we would get to know how many interlock bricks required for 1000 square feet house. Further, he used a standard hollow block size of 16.5 inches x 8.5 inches x 8.5 inches for the calculations.

Let me share the calculation step by step:

• Total wall area: For my 1000 sq ft house with walls about 10 feet high, the total wall area he calculated as:

• Total built-up area: 1000 sq ft

• Wall perimeter: Approx. 120 ft (assuming a rectangular plan)

• Total wall area = Perimeter x Wall height = 120 ft x 10 ft = 1,200 sq ft

• Face area of a block: He then calculated face area considering mortar thickness 1/2 inch. The dimensions became:

• Length: 16.5 inches = 1.375 ft

• Height: 8.5 inches = 0.71 ft

• Face area of a block = 1.375 ft x 0.71 ft = 0.975 sq ft

• Blocks needed: Finally, he calculated the required blocks using the below formula.

• Total blocks = Total wall area ÷ Face area of a single block = 1,200 ÷ 0.975 = 1,230 blocks.

He added 10% extra for cutting and unforeseen wastage. So, the last count was around 1,350 hollow blocks. For thinner walls or interlock bricks, he said around 4,500 interlock bricks would be required for a similar structure.
