I would say every household should have a sub-meter installed. Whether you're a landlord wanting to bill tenants fairly or a resident seeking to track your electricity usage, understanding the
sub meter connection price
is crucial. I think sub-meters are a great way to monitor and manage individual electricity consumption in shared spaces. I installed a sub-meter for me and my tenant last month, so I can tell you the price and the factors that affect the price.
Factors Influencing Submeter Installation Cost
The cost of installing sub-meters in India depends on several factors:
- Type of Meter:
- Single-phase:
These are ideal for residential units and cost around Rs100 per meter.
- Three-phase:
These are used for commercial or industrial spaces and cost from Rs200 to Rs500 per meter.
- CT Meter:
They are used for high-power applications and cost around Rs500 per meter.
- HT-PT Meter:
These are used for very high voltage applications and cost around ₹1,050 per meter.
- Number of Meters:
If you install more meters then it will raise costs due to increased materials and labour.
- Labor Costs:
The labour rates vary depending on location and electrician expertise.
- Additional Requirements:
If you also go for extra features like sensors or intercoms, it can increase costs significantly.

How to calculate bill from submeter?
If you have the current and last month's meter readings, you can easily compute the power cost. When discussing meter reading, two parameters come into play, which are:
kWh unit
Maximum demand (kW)
You can calculate the bill from the below formula:
Total Electricity Bill = Energy Charge + Fixed Charge + Electricity Duty
Where,
Electricity Duty = (Energy Charge + Fixed Charge) x Tax Rate/100
Fixed Charge = Sanction Load x Fixed Charge Rate
Energy Charge = (Current Month Unit (Kwh) – Last Month Unit (Kwh)) x Unit Rate
