I am currently in Delhi and in just about 10 days, we will switch on our fans and there will be no looking back until November. The fact is that the summer electricity bill is so high that I keep wondering what appliance is consuming the most electricity. I asked my brother how much electricity does a fan use and I was shocked to know that it actually consumes way more energy than a normal tube light. Let me tell you what he says exactly about it.

Get ready to understand the electricity usage of a fan in India. I came to know that an average fan consumes about 75 watts of electricity per hour. Which is almost 20 watts more than a normal tubelight. If you have an old model fan then the electricity consumption can go as high as 90 watts per hour.

When I learned this, I decided to replace my old fans at least with new BEE rated fans which consume power of around 50 watts per hour.

If you install new and efficient BEE rated fans the average cost of operating a fan would be around Rs. 5 per unit. But my brother told me that I can bring the cost of fan consumption if operated for 8 hours a day to Rs. 730 instead of Rs. 1095. This may look like a small amount but as per monthly consumption for each fan in the house, it is likely to make a huge difference in electricity bill and so it did.

Anyway, this should answer your question how much electricity does a fan use.

The wattage of a fan, how often it is used, and how efficiently it operates all affect how much a fan consume electricity. Let’s check out the units it consume below.

How many units does a fan consume?

If you are wondering how many units consumed by fan, I’d like to say that the electricity consumption of a ceiling fan is about 75 Watts.

Let's see how much energy a ceiling fan uses per day using the following example:

Imagine you have a single 75-watt fan in your house that runs for four hours during the day and eight hours at night. We will therefore determine how much power this particular fan uses:

  • One fan's daily energy use = Rated power X Operational hours

  • One fan uses 75 watts of power per day, multiplied by 12 hours.

  • As a result, 900 watt hours of power is used by 1 fan per day.

To save electricity, it is important to choose a fan that is the right size for the room and to use the fan on the lowest setting that is comfortable. You should also turn off the fan when you are not using it.

Hope this helps:)

I am pretty sure every Indian family has an issue with the electricity consumption. I feel the bill amount increases mainly for the fan electricity consumption. Most of us do not switch it off on time until we get scolded. The average fan watts per hour is 75 Watts. You can calculate the electricity consumption yourself as well. I did it a few months back so let me share how much electricity does a ceiling fan use in 24 hours. Read this answer and learn the formula.

How much unit of electricity consumed by fan per day?

As I said, a fan consumes 75 Watt electricity but it is not the same for all. It will depend on several factors like

  • Brand or company of the fan

  • Size of the fam

  • How long the fan is switched on

  • Air delivery rate

  • Speed of the air delivered

  • Fan’s revolution in one minute and more

Here is a chart to help you know which sized fan consumes how much wattage

Now to answer what is the ceiling fan power consumption per hour in units, let me cite an example. Suppose a 100-watt ceiling fan uses 100 watts of power per hour. 1000 watts = 1 kilowatt

So if a 100-watt fan runs continuously for 24 hours, it will use 2400 watt hours or 2.4-kilowatt hours which is = 2.4 units of electricity (1 unit = 1-kilowatt hour). This is the

fan power consumption in units calculation.

You can read about the fan details in the package or can ask the shopkeeper about it as well. They can help you understand fan electricity consumption in detail.
