A stamp duty is also applicable on conveyance deeds, sale deeds and power of attorney papers. Stamp duty charges vary depending on the state, area, gender, age and a few other factors. Across India, the stamp duty charges vary from 2% to 8%. For instance, the stamp duty in Maharashtra is currently around 2 percent till 31st December due the pandemic (normally, 5%). While in Tamil Nadu, it is around 7 per cent and hasn’t been changed as that of Maharashtra. Some other factors like location, age and gender have an impact on the stamp duty charges. For example, the stamp duty in Mumbai is 2% (5% normally), while that in Thane and Pune is 3% (6% normally). In Delhi, it is 4% if the owner is a woman and 5% if the owner is a man. In Bangalore, it is dependent on the total amount of the property - 5% (above Rs 35 lakh), 3% (Rs 21-35 lakh), 2% (Less than Rs 20 lakh).
