Solar energy is a renewable source of energy that has been very popular nowadays. Sunlight is available in abundance in our country and thankfully, we have the technology (solar power panels) to convert this energy into electric power. Most houses have a backyard or a roof where you can install solar panels and produce electricity. Read below to know how much kW is required for a house in India.

How Much Kilowatt Required For Home:

On average, a home with monthly electricity consumption of 1000 kWh needs 26 to 30 solar panels of 320 Watts.

You can use this formula to calculate the total no. of solar panels to offset your house electricity bill completely:

Total kW of solar panels needed for your home = (monthly average power consumption of house)/120

kVA = (Real power in kW)/(Power factor)

Now, you know how much kVA is required for a house in India

No. of solar panels needed = (kW obtained in the above calculation)/(Wattage of 1 solar panel that you want to use. (Average wattage of most solar panels is above 300 watts nowadays).

Let me explain how many kW required for a house India using an example:

If your house consumes 1000 kWh of electricity monthly, and you want to use 320-watt solar panels, then the solar requirement of your home is 1000kWh/120kWh = 8.3kW of solar panels.

So, if you want to use 320-watt solar panels, the total no. of solar panels required to power your home = 8300 watts / 320 watts = 26 solar panels.

I hope now you know how much kW is required for a house in India.

A typical solar panel system can generate around 3 to 5 kilowatts of power, which is sufficient for an entire household. I had the same question when we planned to install solar panels last year. We hired an electrician whom we asked how much kW is required for a house in India. He told us that an average Indian household consumes approximately 3,600 kWh of electricity per year. However, he mentioned this estimate may vary depending on many factors, like the size of the home, number of people, appliances used, etc. For our house, he said 3 to 5 kW of power meets all the needs.

How to Calculate Solar Panel Requirement?

My father is an electrical engineer. He loves to share insights about his work with me which he feels may be important. He told me

how much Kilowatt required for home. He said that

the average power consumption for a typical house in India is around 260 kWh per month. This translates to approximately 2.4 kW of power required to run the appliances and devices in an average Indian household.

But he said that this is not a fixed number because there are many factors that govern this number. I will tell you about these factors, apart from telling you how much KW connection is required for a house in India.

  • Size of the House:

If you have a large house you will have a higher power demand due to the increased number of appliances, larger living spaces, and additional features like swimming pools or home theatres. So, the power required will also be higher.

  • Number of Occupants:

For homes with joint families or with more occupants, the power will be higher too. Because such homes have a higher usage of appliances, lighting, and electronic devices.

  • Appliance Usage:

The types of appliances and their usage patterns can also significantly impact power consumption.

  • Climate:

In hotter regions, air conditioners are used more frequently, which leads to higher power consumption during the summer months.

  • Regional Variations:

And the electricity consumption patterns also vary across different regions of India due to climatic differences, lifestyle preferences, and availability of renewable energy sources.

Now you know

It is hard to tell how much kW is required for a house with 2 AC without knowing what type of AC you have installed, how hot the room is, how much is the area of the room and some other aspects. It will always be better to ask an expert electrician about it after letting him visit your house. But I can give you an example to help you know how many kW needed to run a house. So get to know about it here:

How much kW meter is required for a house in India?

The power requirement to run a house can vary widely based on factors like the size of the house, the number and types of appliances used, heating or cooling systems, and energy-efficient practices. A medium-sized house in a temperate climate. It has basic appliances like a refrigerator, a washing machine, a TV, some lights, and a laptop. Additionally, it's equipped with a central heating and cooling system.

The appliances' combined power consumption might be around 5 kW under normal usage. The heating and cooling system, if energy-efficient, could consume 3-5 kW. With lights and occasional laptop usage, you might need another 1 kW. This totals around 9-11 kW.

Now for ACs, let me give you a calculation:

Let's say the house is equipped with two split AC units. Each AC unit has a cooling capacity of 1.5 tons, equivalent to around 5.25 kW (1 ton = 3.5 kW).

When both AC units are operating at full capacity, the combined power consumption would be approximately 10.5 kW (2 units x 5.25 kW/unit)

This is just to give you an idea. It is better to seek an expert’s help to get the exact details.

How much kw solar is required for a house?

Use the methods below to determine average energy consumption per household in India:

  • Determine your monthly average for electricity use.

  • Your need for solar panels in kilowatts can be calculated by dividing your typical monthly power usage by your average monthly solar energy production (115 kWh if you live in India).

  • Subtract the wattage of one solar panel from the required number of solar kilowatts (Take one solar panel wattage to be 330 watts as this is the most common solar panel used in 2020).

If your home's typical monthly energy use is 900 kWh and you live in Mumbai, India, how many solar panels will you need for your home? Let's calculate:

  • The average monthly energy use for your home is 900 kWh.

  • Your monthly solar energy production is 115 kWh on average.

  • Divide the average monthly power to calculate the number of solar panels in a kilowatt.

  • Generation by the average monthly power consumption (900 kWh / 115 kWh = 7.82 kW of solar panels).

  • Divide the 7.82 kilowatts of solar panels by each solar panel's wattage, which is 330 watts. 7,800 watts / 330 watts = 23.63, or around 24 solar panels.

  • Now you know how many kw is required for a house.

How much kw required for home in India?

In India, a typical home uses 260 kWh of electricity per month. Therefore, an average Indian home requires 2.4 kW of solar power or 6 solar panels with 330 watts each. Sanjana’s answer also guides in detail about electricity consumption. A smaller house in a temperate region would consume around 210-kilowatt hours (kWh) per month. Whereas a larger house where air conditioners require the most energy might use 2,000 kWh or more. The typical home uses 900 kWh per month. That works out at 1.25 kWh every hour or 30 kWh per day.

In 2016, India's residential electricity consumption per individual was 206.7-kilowatt hours. The industry sector consumed the most energy overall in the fiscal year 2018 (approximately 48%). It is then followed by the home and agricultural sectors (at 24 and 18%, correspondingly).

How much kw electricity is required for a house in India for 3 bedrooms?

According to these calculations, the average gas consumption for a 1- or 2-bedroom house now stands at around 7500 kWh. While the average electricity usage is around 2100kW. A simple three or four-bedroom house uses 3200kWh of electricity and 12600 kWh of gas each year.

Now you know how much kw required for home.
