I was trying to figure out how much paint do I need for 500 square feet space. To learn about that, I got in touch with a painter from NoBroker. The painter informed me that around 130 sq. ft. can be covered with 1 litre of paint but this amount could vary depending on the number of coats needed. He also told me about a couple of factors that decide the number of coats of paint required for a wall.
What is the Amount of Paint Required for 500 Square Feet?
He started by giving me a rough estimate of the amount of paint needed for 500 sq. ft., which is 500/130 = 3.85 litres. He further said if 2 coats are used, then the amount of paint required is 3.85 x 2 = 7.7 litres. And for 3 coats, the amount would be 3.85 x 3 = 11.55 litres of paint.
Following this, he told me about the factors that decide the number of coats needed, which are
Previous Paint Job: If the new colour is the same as the previous colour, less amount of paint is needed. More paint is needed in case of different colours.
Drywall Painting: This type of painting needs a lot of paint as the first two coats of paint go to smoothening the wall surface.
Primer: Primers reduce the number of coats needed on a wall.
Quality of Paint: Low quality paint doesn't perform well and quite a lot of paint is needed.
And that’s all he told me. As for my house, I bought 4 litres of paint. Hope this helps.
