A few days back, I painted my living room, but before that, I had no idea how much paint required for one room. To know how to calculate it I did some research and learned about the steps that are required to be followed. I have explained the steps with a formula and an example.

How Much Paint is Required for One Room?

I have added an example of calculating the painting in one room below.

Let's assume that each wall in the room is 12 feet in length and its height 10 feet.

  • We need to find the perimeter of the room, which is 2(L + B) = 2( 12+12) = 48 feet.

  • Now, we need to find the total surface area of the room, which is Perimeter x Height = 48 x 7 = 336 sq. ft.

  • After that, let's consider the surface area of each window and door is 15 sq ft. and 20 sq. ft. So, that would make their surface area = 20 + 15 = 35 sq. ft.

  • We need to deduct the surface area of the windows and doors from the total surface area of the room to find the total paintable area, which is: Total Paintable Area = 336 - 35 = 301 sq. ft.

  • Now, assuming that 1 litre of paint covers 130 sq. ft., depending on how many coats of paint on interior walls are used.

  • So, the amount of paint required will be 301/130 = 2.3 litre.

And that would be the amount of paint needed to paint one room. I hope this solves your query about how much litre paint is required for a room.

How much paint needed for 10X10 room?

Hi Seerat, I want to help you with how much litre paint is required for a room. You can use a simple formula to determine the paint needed for the room. Let me share whatever is necessary.

How Much Paint is Required for One Room?

The formula to calculate the amount of paint you’ll need goes something like this:

Total square footage = Height (in feet) x Width (in feet)

Mr Siddharth has shared a detailed method to calculate the amount of paint needed, so you should refer to their answer now that you know the method.

Factors Determining How Much Paint is Required for One Wall?

When it comes to calculating the quantity of paint required, you must consider the following things:

  1. Room’s shape and dimensions of the wall: The larger the room, the more would be the requirement of paint. The shape also plays a role in that differently shaped walls may need more paint, depending on the exact shape.

  2. Wall’s condition: A flat and smooth surface is easier to paint and needs a lesser amount. Whereas, a rough and bumpy surface needs more paint to fine-tune it.

  3. Paint coverage: The coverage in general is considered 130 square feet per litre. If your paint has a greater coverage, you’d need less paint.

This is all from my side regarding how much paint required for one room. I hope you find the information useful.

Hi Seerat, Let me tell you, if you want to know “how much paint is needed to paint a room?” I can help you with the calculation that you must follow before going to the paint store.

How Much Paint Does it Take to Paint a Room?

  • Ceiling Paint Calculator Per Square Foot:

Consider a space that is 10 by 20 feet in size and 7 feet tall, with two windows and two doors.

Step 1: Determine the entire area, such as 10 * 20 = 200 square feet.

Step 2: Divide it using the standard number of 350 (1 gallon of paint for every 350 square feet). You will obtain the 0.5 gallons of paint required for that ceiling area, 200/350.

  • Calculator for Wall Paint:

Step 1: Determine the area in square feet (10+20+10+20)*7.

Step 2: Determine the area of the windows and doors, i.e., 20 * 2 + 15 * 2 = 70 square feet, where the doors are 20 feet and the windows are 15 feet wide.

Step 3: Take the unpainted area and subtract it (420 - 70 = 350 square feet).

Step 4: Divide that amount by 350, meaning that (350/350) this is equal to one gallon of paint required to paint a room's interior .

I hope this calculation would help you with your query, “how much paint is required for a room?”

To find out how much litre paint is required for a room, you will need to consider some factors like:

  • Room size

  • Doors and windows

  • Paint coats you are required to give to the walls

  • Paint coverage

  • Surface condition

  • The type of paint and others

Let me cite the simple formula that a painter suggested to us to find out the amount of paint required for a room.

How Much Paint is Required for One Room?

To find out how much paint required for 1 room, you will first need to determine the room dimension, perimeter, surface area, and others. Let me cite an example. Suppose

  • Room Dimensions: The walls are 10 feet in length, and the room is 7 feet high.

  • Perimeter Calculation: The total perimeter is 40 feet.

  • Surface Area Calculation: The surface area of a room is 280 sq. ft.

  • Subtract Doors and Windows: Minus 35 sq. ft. for doors and windows.

  • Paintable Surface Area: Adjusted area for painting is 245 sq. ft.

  • Paint Coverage: Assuming 1 litre covers 130 sq. ft.

So the amount of paint required = divide the paintable area by coverage, i.e., 245/130= 1.8-2. So approximately 2 litres will be needed for the entire coverage of the surface. The paint required for 1 room hence is around 2 ltrs.

How much paint is required to paint a room?

Painting a room is a very easy process if you plan and execute it in a proper way. All you need is some understanding of the structure, measurements of the room and proper planning. I advise you to check your wall nature and previous colour depth to understand the requirement. This is what I follow and it helped me throughout the years. It also helped me save money and time. Let’s see how much paint required for one room.

Calculation of paint for one room:

1) You should start by measuring the height and width of the room. This is the first step to follow to get the idea about the paint required.

2) Calculate the wall's surface area in square feet or metres. The square footage of a wall that is 20 feet broad and 10 feet high, for example, is 200. The square footage of each wall is 250 if the room's long walls are 25 feet wide. In a normal room, adjacent walls may have the same surface area.

3) Add the totals of the four walls to get the entire basic surface area of the walls. The basic surface area in our case is 700 (200+200+250+250 = 900).

4) Consider the regions around the doors and windows. You have to deduct the surface area of doors, frames and windows. There are two doors and a window in a room with a wall surface size of 900 square feet. So, 1 door measures 5 feet width by 9 feet tall, including the frame. Another door is 7 feet by 10 feet. The window measures 8 feet broad by 4 feet tall. So the total square footage is (45+70+32 = 147).

5) Subtract the gross surface area from the total surface area. Subtract the total surface area of the 4 walls from the area of the doors and windows. It's 548 square feet in our case (900 - 147 = 753).

6) You'll have to add sufficient paint to cover approximately 60 square feet of space. This includes grills and small corners.

7) The length and width of the ceiling are 25 feet and 15 feet. By multiplying it, we get the surface area of the ceiling 375 square feet. It will be the same for the floor also.

8) So our total square footage is 1650 (900+375+375). We need around 4 gallons (15 litres) to paint the entire room approximately.

I hope you understood how much paint required for one room.
