Wall putty is basically a mix of white cement, water and other additives which is used to seal imperfections and fill gaps. It is a smooth paste applied on to the walls which works as a base for paint. There are many companies out there selling wall putties but how do you know how much of it you need? If you are in a fix about how much wall putty required for one room then I can help you.

I recently got my 1 RK fixed for a tenant who was about to shift in a week’s time. I had to call the painting guys to fix whatever was needed and they said it would be good if I applied wall putty. So I asked them how much putty do I need for a room. He asked me to wait and did this:

  1. He measured the wall area. The wall is rectangular in shape so he simply did the length x breadth thing and calculated the wall area.

  2. Similarly he added the wall area for walls together.

  3. He told me to get the Birla wall care putty as he had a fair idea of how much it would be required.

  4. As per his analysis, 1 kg of wall care putty spreads approximately 22-25 square feet of surface area and coverage of 1.90-2.05 square meters per kg. So he did the math and told me about the requirements.

I hope this clarifies how much wall putty required for one room.

The size of the space, the state of the walls, and the number of coats you intend to apply are some of the variables that determine how much wall putty required for one room.

How Much Amount of Putty Required for One Room?

Take a measurement of the room's total wall area first. To do this, add together all of the wall lengths and multiply the result by the room's height to find the perimeter. For instance, the perimeter of a room measuring 10 feet by 12 feet with an 8-foot ceiling is equal to (10 + 12 + 10 + 12) = 44 feet. A total of 352 square feet is the wall area when multiplied by the height.

Wall putty covers different areas differently depending on the manufacturer, but one kilogram usually covers about 20 square feet in a single application. Usually, two coats are advised for a smooth finish. As a result, 17.6 kg for one coat and 35.2 kg for two coats will be sufficient for 352 square feet.

But you might need a little bit extra if the walls are especially imperfect or if you want a very smooth finish. To cover any waste or further touch-ups, it's best to buy an extra 10–20%. In light of this, 40 kg of wall putty should be enough to cover a standard-sized room with two coats.

Always check the specific product's coverage details and consider consulting with a professional for more accurate estimates based on your room's condition. I hope this helps you understand how many kg wall putty required for one room.

What is the Thickness of Wall Putty?

I recently got my house built and was planning to get it painted. I asked a friend to help me paint it and asked about the process. He told me that since my house is new, I need to get the wall putty done before getting it painted. After hearing this, I asked him how much putty is needed for a 10 12 room. Here is what he told me.

What is the Amount of Putty Required for One Room?

He told me that the calculation of the wall putty estimate is done in two steps.

  • Calculating the area of all the wall and ceiling of the room

  • Divide the area by 15.

He told me to find out the height of the ceiling, which I told him to be 10 feet. After that he told me that the perimeter of my room would be

2(10+12) = 44 feet

Now, he told me that area of my room would be

Area = area of wall + area of ceiling = (44x10) + (10x12) = 560 sq. ft.

Now, this is the amount of putty that is needed for the interior of the room . To find the wall putty required he told me to divide the Area of the room by 15, because that is area a 1 Kg of wall putty can cover.

How much putty do I need for a room = 560/15 = 37.3kg

Adding wastage and rounding off this figure would make it

40 Kg

He also told me that I can use the same formula to know how much putty is needed for a 12x12 room. And that’s about it. I hope this information about how much putty is needed for a 10 12 room has been of help to you.

How much Wall Putty Required for 100 Sq Ft?

Hello buddy! The paint done in my bedroom had started to scrape off recently. The walls were looking ugly and started smelling as well. Hence, my wife persisted in getting a complete makeover through a new painting job. We asked the service provider about the consumption of wall putty per sqm to estimate the cost for the whole project. Let me tell you what I found out.

How much putty need for a room

When I got my room painted, there were several factors which were attached to the amount of putty required. You must consider them as they play a major role in deciding the putty needed. They are as follows.

  1. The type of wall putty used: The requirement of putty depends on whether you’re applying white cement wall putty or acrylic wall putty.

  2. Condition of the wall’s surface: This criterion talks about the state of your plastered walls. If the surface is rough, then the number of coats of wall putty needed would be three. Otherwise, a smooth surface can produce a good outcome in just 2 coats of putty as well.

Wall putty consumption per sqm

Let me share the consumption of a wall putty per square metre. The mentioned figure is regarding JK Cement SmoothMaxX wall putty as we got the same product for our room. The coverage can vary based on the brand you choose.

The wall putty consumption is 1.85-2.04 per square metre.

I hope this helps:)

You will have to learn what your putty coverage area is to know what amount you have to spend. Last year, we constructed a puja room on our top floor and wanted to apply putty to the walls. We had already spent a lot of money, so we wanted to know how much we had to spend for the wall putty coverage. We called a painter and asked him about it. He explained the wall putty calculation minutely, so let me share it with you here. Read this answer and be sure to get almost the exact amount.

How to calculate the coverage area of wall putty?

There are just a few steps you will need to follow to apply the putty. First

  • Calculate the area of your wall (multiply Length*breadth)

  • Choose the putty type and know across how much area it spreads(you can check the package and know about it)

For example, 1 KG of Birla White WallCare Putty spreads across 20-22 sq ft(coverage of 1.86-2.04sq mt per kg)

  • Make the slurry(mix Birla White WallCare Putty with 36-38% of clean water)

  • Apply the putty(make it 2 mm thick)

These are the steps that need to be followed. The consumption rate will, however, depend on the brand and the mixture. If you mix 40% clean water, you will need less putty, but the result might not be good. Hence before doing the wall putty calculation, you will have to consider these things like

  • Which brand of putty you are using

  • How thick you are making the mixture

  • How many coats you are giving and many other things.

Yet, on average, the coverage area putty consumption per sqm is

1.86–2.04 per sqm. If these steps seem difficult, it will be best to seek an expert painter’s help to know the exact

putty coverage area and cost.
