My old plywood wardrobe had deep scratches and nail holes. I decided to give a new coat of duco paint because it is suitable for plywood and lasts up to 15-20 years. I hence  researched how to apply duco paint on plywood.  I found that it can be done by cleaning, priming and then spraying the paint. I’ll take you through the simple steps I came across from preparation to finishing.

How to Apply Duco Paint on Wood?

Here’s the process that I came

across

for

applying

duco paint on wood:

Cleaning and Preparation

You need to start by cleaning the wood surface using a soft cloth and mild soap water, then scrape it with 220-320 grit sandpaper. You can also use a disc sander machine, if available to remove any old finishes while preparing the surface for coating.

Filling

Use a filler to cover any patches or holes on the surface, and gently sand that area once it's dried completely. Wood filler is usually thick, make sure it is water-based so it can be easily diluted by mixing with thinner to fill the gaps.

Priming

Apply a premium-quality wood primer to help the paint stick to the wood better by preventing the soaking up of the paint.

You can choose an oil-based or water-based primer that is suitable for the plywood. For even application of the primer use a brush to reach the hard places like the edges and a roller for flat wood surfaces.

Application

Mix the duco paint you selected with duco thinner in 1:2 ratio. Make sure that the quantity of the paint is higher than thinner. Since the paint is thick, the thinner provides an easy application of the paint on the surface.

For a smoother surface, spray the paint in thin and even strokes. You may need to coat it multiple times, let each coat dry before applying the next layer and sanding between the coats is required to remove any defects. Lastly, topcoat the wood with varnish to increase the durability of the paint.

Polishing

You have to use a feather duster or a soft cloth to clean as the duco paint is prone to scratches and chipping.

Since I found the process time-consuming I decided to hire a professional painter from NoBroker. I hope this helps you get an idea of how to apply duco paint on plywood.
