During our research, I learned that the former Indian citizens must submit a certificate of renunciation of Indian citizenship while seeking for an OCI. If you do not have a renunciation certificate, you will need to apply for one first. After that you can apply for OCI.
Eligibility to apply OCI card in India:
A foreign national who is either
an Indian citizen at the time of
at any time after, January 26, 1950
was eligible to become an Indian citizen on January 26, 1950
was a member of a territory that joined India after August 15, 1947
is the child, grandchild, or great grandchild of such a citizen
is the minor child of such persons mentioned above
is the minor child and whose both parents are Indian citizens is eligible for registration as OCI cardholder.
Additionally, spouses of foreign origin of Indian citizens or spouses of foreign origin of holders of Overseas Citizen of India cards who have been married for a continuous period of at least two years prior to the submission of the application are also eligible to register as OCI cardholders.
No one, however, shall be eligible for registration as an Overseas Citizen of India Cardholder if they are or have ever been a citizen of Pakistan, Bangladesh, or of any other country that the Central Government may specify by notification in the Official Gazette.
While in possession of a tourist visa, missionary visa, or mountaineering visa, foreign nationals cannot apply for OCI in India.
Moreover, the foreigner has to be ordinarily resident of India to be eligible to apply for OCI registration in India.
