Previously, I had no idea about how polyurethane on painted wood would work. However, on consulting with a painter, I was informed that applying polyurethane is crucial for a best finish. By forming a protective layer, it increases the painted surface's durability, scratch resistance ability, and glossy, smooth appearance. I have shared the steps that I took to apply polyurethane on the painted wooden surface.

How to Apply Polyurethane to Painted Wood?

  • To give the polyurethane something to stick to, I lightly sanded the painted wood using 220 grit sandpaper. Once the surface has been sanded, I cleaned it.

  • There are different types of Polyurethane: Oil based, and Water based. I opted for an oil based one. Oil-based polyurethane dries more slowly but offers a warm tone.

  • To prevent bubbles, stirred the polyurethane container rather than shaking it. For oil-based polyurethane, I used a brush with natural bristles. Applied a thin, equal coat along the grain of the wood.

  • As directed by the manufacturer, the initial coat should be left to dry for 24 hours for oil-based polyurethane.

  • So after almost a day, to get rid of flaws, I lightly sanded the dry polyurethane finish using 320-grit sandpaper, and used a fresh cloth to remove any dust.

  • I applied a second coat of polyurethane in the same manner by which I applied the 1st coat. The poly will apply more smoothly and more easily with the second coat.

This is all about how to apply polyurethane on painted wood. One piece of advice from my end is to let the polyurethane dry for a minimum of 24 hours before handling it after the last layer has been applied. Make sure to handle the polyurethane very softly as it may take two or three days to cure to a more durable finish and with little to no odour.
