Learning how to apply varnish on wood isn't a complex process, but proper preparation and technique ensure a smooth, professional finish. Let me share the steps with you all;

How to Apply Varnish in Wood?

  • Start by using 80 to 220 grit sandpaper to sand the wood, gradually your way up in grit.

  • To make sure that there is no dust left on the hardwood surface, give it a good vacuuming. The project should then be thoroughly cleaned, including any nooks and turns, using a fresh rag dampened with mineral spirits.

  • Usually, you have to shake or stir varnish before using it. Open the lid and give your varnish a good stir if it comes in a paint-style can. Shake the can for about ten seconds with the lid closed. Replace the cap or lid on your varnish can after adding some finish to a sanitised secondary container.

  • Fold a cotton cloth into a tiny rectangle. Slide the cloth into your container. Simply enough to apply a uniform, moist amount to cover the wooden surface is all that is needed.

  • Use overlapping strokes to gently wash the surface while following the grain of the wood. Scrubbing the varnish into the grain is not necessary.

  • Using a lot of force could cause streaks. Make sure you have covered the entire surface and that no areas were missed. However, after you've finished applying, don't wipe over that region. As indicated by the drying time on the can, let the finish dry.

  • Use 400 or 600-grit sandpaper to lightly sand the hardwood surface once the first coat of finish has dried. Avoid using forceful sanding. As an alternative, use very little pressure and strive for a consistent, smooth feel.

  • To get rid of any dust, use mineral spirits to clean the surface with a fresh towel.

  • Apply one or two extra coats of varnish to make the wooden surface seem good. Sand the item again using 400–600 grit sandpaper in between coats, and then wipe it down with mineral spirits.

These steps would help you understand how do you apply varnish to wood.
