Do you have a living room that is oddly shaped? If yes, don’t worry. My living room is long, constrained, and filled with challenges. It is divided into three halves: a corridor, a wall of windows, and an entranceway. Living rooms with odd shapes don't necessarily have to feel odd. I will tell you how I planned the furniture layout for long narrow living room of my home.

How to arrange furniture in a long living room?

I realised right away when I shifted in my current house how difficult it would be to fit furniture in our long, narrow living room. It was particularly difficult because there were so many things to get around. There were several points of entry and exit. The room is split in half by the hallway and affixed to a visible entrance. There was a continuous window wall with possibilities for different focal points. Our living room has gone through several different configurations in the four years that we have been here.

Yet when I started arranging furniture in long living room. I realised that my living room needed different seating arrangements, and gradually altered my design aesthetic, new permutations evolved.

Things to consider for long living room furniture placement

While planning the arrangement of a living room, there are several factors to take into account.

  • Overcoming challenges

  • Room focal point

  • Flow

  • Seats required

  • Use of the space

Long living room furniture arrangement

Firstly, creating zones. Our living room and entryway, for instance, are virtually one big room. Hence, we had to somehow establish a division. What do you want the main point of the room to be? A focal point is frequently used to guide furniture layout decisions. This could include a fireplace, TV, or conversation space, for instance.

Next, how does the room's flow function? To avoid people tripping over the furniture when using the area, you should arrange the furniture to create a natural flow through the room.

Now think about how much seating do you require? Is it possible to get by with a single compact loveseat and a few armchairs? Or is a large sectional with lots of seating what you require?

Finally, think about including zones. Although designing for long, narrow living rooms may seem challenging, you actually have the chance to create different living areas inside one room. The first section might be used for conversation, the second for a game table, the third for storage, etc. All that matters is what you need!

I hope this helps you understand the furniture layout for long narrow living room.
