You've come to the right place if you're a surveyor or a landowner looking to determine how to calculate area of land with unequal sides. There are usually frequent issues encountered by surveyors or students when attempting to determine the area of an uneven property. If the land is square, rectangular, or triangular, the area of the land can be simply calculated using a simple geometrical formula.

There are no fixed geometrical shapes such as a triangle, rectangle, or square in all plots or land. As a result, calculating the area of certain types of land that are not having a defined geometrical shape is typically problematic.

What is the formula for calculating land area?
  • Determine the length and width of the area you'll be working within feet (for short)

  • The square feet are calculated by multiplying the length by the width.

  • Here's a simple formula to remember: Area in square feet = length (in feet) x breadth (in feet).

How to calculate square feet of land with uneven sides?

Divide the given shape into smaller regular shapes to find the area of irregular shapes. In the case of irregular shapes, the area is measured in square units.

  • Fundamentally, you can split up any piece of land with uneven sides into various small triangles or rectangles.

  • Now you have to calculate the area of each triangle or each rectangle using a common formula.

  • Once you get the area of each triangle or rectangle in that piece of land. You can finally add them up to get the total area of that piece of land.

  • The formula for computing the area of a triangle is:

    Area of a Triangle (A) =

    s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)

Here ‘s’ stands for semi-perimeter and a, b, and c are the triangle's sides. (sum of three sides)/ 2 = (a+b+c) divided by 2 is the value of this semi-perimeter.

  • The formula for computing the area of a rectangle is= Area (A) = w

    ×

    z. Where ‘z’ is the length and ‘w’ is the breadth of a rectangle.

This process will simplify the entire computing process and will answer the question of how to calculate area of land with unequal sides?

Hi, I was in a similar situation, where I cracked my head over calculating an unshaped land area. It’s more complicated than I had imagined. I researched online about how to find area of land with unequal sides, but couldn’t figure it out. I needed to know our plot area, and the calculations weren’t going anywhere until I came across a few tutorials online, and finally could determine the area. Let me make this easier for you.

How to Calculate Unshaped Land Area?

I understood that to calculate the area of a land with unequal sides cannot be done with a regular geometrical formula. You must divide the irregular shape into two or more regular ones like triangle, square, rectangle, etc first. Here are some steps I took.

  1. First, you need to divide your land into familiar shapes. This will make it easier to find out the area. The land I wanted to calculate was a combination of a triangle and squares.

  2. So, I first calculated the area of triangle and squares using the geometrical formula of both.

  3. Once I found the area of each individual shape, I added them together and got the total plot area. It’s as simple as a regular sum.

So, that’s the easiest way I found to determine the area of an unequal land. I hope this gives you an idea on how to calculate area of unshaped land.

How to Measure a Plot of Land?

When I first needed to figure out how to calculate area of a land with 4 unequal sides, I thought it was just a matter of basic measurements. But it turned out to be a bit more complex than calculating the area of a simple square or rectangle. I had an irregularly shaped plot, and I wasn’t sure how to go about it. After discussing it with my dad and doing some research, I found an effective method that works even when all sides are different.

Here’s what we did:

How to Find The Area of a Land With 4 Unequal Sides?

Measure All Sides: First, I measured the length of each side of the plot. Since the plot was irregular, all four sides were of different lengths, so I wrote them down carefully.

Divide the Land into Triangles: My dad suggested we break the land into smaller triangles. We drew lines from one corner to another, effectively splitting the plot into triangles. This is a common way to handle irregular shapes.

Use Heron’s Formula for Each Triangle: Now comes the maths part. We used Heron’s formula to calculate the area of each triangle. This formula works well for any triangle if you know the length of its three sides. The formula is:

Area= square root (s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c))

Where:

  • a, b, and c are the lengths of the sides of the triangle.

  • s is the semi-perimeter of the triangle, calculated as s=a+b+c/2

Add the Areas Together: After calculating the area of each triangle using Heron’s formula, we added all the triangle areas together. This gave us the total area of the land.

If you’re ever wondering how to calculate plot area when all sides are different, this method of dividing the land into triangles and using Heron’s formula is very effective. It might involve a bit of calculation, but once you have the measurements, the rest falls into place easily. Following these steps helped me accurately calculate the area of my irregularly shaped plot.

I was going through my nephew’s maths textbook, and I discovered the process to calculate an area of plot with four different sides. Let me share my understanding with you all.

How to calculate area of land with 4 unequal sides?

  • Calculating area of land with 4 unequal sides would require you to first, sketch out the land using the dimensions provided. Then make an appropriate diagonal.

  • Next, determine the areas of the two triangles that the diagonal creates. The size of the land is calculated by adding the areas of the two triangles.

  • Now, use Heron's formula to calculate each triangle's area to determine a quadrilateral's area.

  • Heron's formula to determine a triangle's area is [if a, b, and c are its sides]

  • Triangle's area is equal to √[s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)] square units

  • Where "s" is the triangle's semi-perimeter, which equals (a+b+c)/2.

  • The area of a quadrilateral is then obtained by adding the areas of two triangles.

Hope this will help you:)
