Hi, I saw you asking about how the electricity bill is calculated in India and can share the process for the same with you.

How can we Calculate Electricity Bill in India?

  • Reading the Electricity Metre

Go to your electricity meter and see the reading. Most metres today show the consumption in Kilowatt-hours. Note both the previous and the current month’s reading.

  • How to calculate energy charges in electricity bill with metre reading

Now, you need to subtract the previous month’s metre reading from the current month. This will give you your electricity consumption for the month.

  • Find the tariff rates

The tariff rates applied to your electricity bill can vary based on your location, electricity board, and consumer type. So, find out the tariff charges for your category.

  • Calculating the Energy Consumption Cost

To calculate the energy consumption cost, you need to multiply the electricity consumed during the month with the tariff rate per unit.

  • Adding any extra charges and taxes

The electricity board also adds a service charge connection every month, depending on whether you have a single or a three-phase connection and your consumer category. You are also charged with goods and service tax, electricity duty and metre rent. So, you’ll have to add that too.

All of these components will make up your final electricity bill. This is how to calculate energy bills.

How to Calculate Electricity Bill from Meter Reading?

Last month, my electricity bill was Rs 2800 which was too high. I live alone and most of the time I am in the office. So I figured there was some mistake and I wanted to know how to calculate the electricity bill in India to get it corrected. My friend helped me out. He mentioned that to do the proper calculation, I will need metre reading and the per unit charge of electricity in my area. Once I had them, I figured how is electricity bill calculated in India.

How Electricity Bill Calculated in India?

It is very easy to calculate the electricity bill in India. This is what I did:

  • I subtracted current metre reading from previous month’s reading to get the energy consumption

  • Then I simply multiplied the units consumed with the per-unit charges based on the applicable slabs

  • I had to add the fixed charges and energy duty to get the total bill

Let me share an example:

Suppose you consumed 250 units and your per unit charge is 5.02, then the energy charge will be Rs. 1,255. Now you will need to add the fixed charge, say Rs 40 so that would make the total Rs 1,295. So this will be your electricity bill.

In my case, the electricity meter malfunctioned and that is why the charge was so high. I am so glad I did the calculation or else I might have paid the amount.

Our monthly expenses aren't complete without paying our electricity bills. However, a lot of individuals are unaware of how is electricity bill calculated, which can cause confusion and annoyance when the bill comes. My parents stay in Mumbai, I calculate their electricity bill per month. Let me share my insights regarding this.

How to calculate electricity bill in Maharashtra?

Any estimate of an electricity bill is going to depend on the total number of electricity units consumed as well as their tariffs or slabs (categories).

Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited's tariff or slab rates in Mumbai, Maharashtra, are classified into four categories based on the amount of electricity consumed.

Maharashtra Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited slab or tariff rates:
  • Category 1

(0 to 100 units) Unit Charge - Rs. 2.90

Fixed charges: Rs. 70

  • Category 2

(100 to 300 units) Unit Charge - Rs. 4.85

Fixed charges: RS. 110

  • Category 3

(300 to 500 units) Unit Charge - Rs. 6.65

Fixed charges: Rs. 110

  • Category 4

(Above 500 units) Unit Charge - Rs. 7.80

Fixed charges: Rs. 135

How electric bill is calculated for 1 (one) Unit electricity in Maharashtra (Adani electricity)?

Depending on your total number of units and related category or slab, the price of one unit of electricity will vary.

Therefore, if you fit into Category 1 and have less than 100 units—for example, 95—your approximate bill will be Rs. 598.532, as shown below.

95*2.9= 275.50

EnergyCharges= Rs. 275.50

FixedCharges=Rs. 70.00

Wheeling Charges (95*1.57)= Rs. 149.15

ConsumerCharges= Rs. 494.65

Govt ED Charges (16*494.65)/100= Rs. 79.14

Govt Tax (95*0.2604)= Rs. 24.74

Total Bill Amount= Rs. 598.53

Additionally, there will be fixed charges, wheeling costs, government electricity duty charges, and a government tax on the sale of electricity in Maharashtra.

Your total number of units will be multiplied by Rs. 1.57 to determine your wheeling charges.

Government electricity duty fees will be 16% of your overall energy consumption fees.

Energy Charges + Fixed Charges + Wheeling Charges = Consumed Energy Charges.

The Maharashtra government tax on the sale of electricity is calculated by multiplying the total number of units by 26.04 paise.

I believe this helps you to understand how is electricity bill calculated.

How is electricity bill calculated?

I tried the methods mentioned by Fedrick Dsouza to calculate the electricity bills and it really worked for me. You can also give it a try to know how to calculate light bill.

You must subtract the current metre reading from the reading from last month in order to get the energy usage for the following month. Once you are aware of the precise amount of energy consumed, you can multiply the units by the per-unit charges to determine the energy charge.

For example:

The SBPDCL charges Rs. 4.22 for the first 100 units, Rs. 5.02 for the next 101–200 units, and Rs. 5.87 for the next 200–300 units for energy.

Your energy costs will be Rs.1394 (100*4.22 + 100*5.02 + 80*5.87) if you utilised 280 units in a month.

By combining the fixed fee of Rs. 40 and the energy duty of Rs. 38 (Rs.0.15 per unit), the entire energy bill may be computed, coming to Rs.1472.

What are the main factors that affect the electricity bill charges?

  • Regardless of how much electricity you consume, you will always be required to pay the fixed fees.

  • These are intended to pay for the essential expenses associated with providing power, such as labour costs, pole and cable repair, etc.

  • Electricity duty in India is determined by how much electricity you use, as permitted by certain states.

  • You will undoubtedly be required to pay more charges if you use more electricity.

  • The only option to lower the electricity tax is to cut back on your average spending.

This is your guide on the electricity bill calculation formula.
