You should measure the land area before the construction to avoid mistakes and losses in the future. The land can be in any shape like triangular, rectangular or in irregular shape. So you must be wondering about how to calculate irregular land area in square feet with the perfect measurement and methods. I also faced this challenge once in my life, so leave it to me, I’ll guide you in the best possible way. We are going to measure the irregular land with a geometrical method. Let’s see how to calculate irregular land area.

Methods on how to measure irregular land area:

You just have to understand the shape of the land whether it’s square, rectangular or in an irregular shape and start measuring it with the help of following methods to get some idea on how to measure irregular plot area. 1) You have to mark all the corner points of the land with a rod or stick. 2) Divide the land into 2 different triangles 2) Then take measurements of all the sides along with only one diagonal of that specific land. 3) Note down all the measurements and start calculating the values. For example: Consider triangle ABD,  Let BD (a) = 7 meter, AD (b) = 6 and AB (c) = 5 So the formula for area of scalene triangle having 3 sides is, Area of triangle = s(s-a) (s-b) (s-c) Where, s = semi perimeter, a = 1st side length, b = 2nd side length, c = 3rd side length. So, semi-perimeter (s) = (a+b+c) / 2 = (7+6+5)/2 = 18/2 = 9 m After putting all the values, Area of triangle ABD = 14.69 m2 Consider triangle BDC,  Let DC (a) = 8 meter, BC (b) = 7 and BD (c) = 9 So the formula for area of scalene triangle having 3 sides is, Area of triangle = s(s-a) (s-b) (s-c) Where, s = semi perimeter, a = 1st side length, b = 2nd side length, c = 3rd side length. So, semi-perimeter (s) = (a+b+c) / 2 = (8+7+9) = 24/2 = 12 m After putting all the values, Area of triangle ABD = 26.83 m2 So, total area of land = Area of triangle ABD + Area of triangle BDC = 14.69 + 26.83 = 41.52 m2

How to calculate irregular land area in square feet?

1 square meter = 10.764 square feet So, total area of land = 41.52 X 10.764 = 446.921 square feet. You just have to multiply the area by 10.764 to get the value in square feet. To know how to calculate odd size plot area, you must discover all the unexplored angles. Divide the asymmetrical form into triangles, squares or rectangles. Calculate the area of each triangle, square and rectangle separately. To find the overall area of the irregular area, add together all of the individual regions. Area total is the total of all separate areas.

How to Measure an Irregular Plot of Land?

  • Map the Land: Using a computer mapping tool or graph paper, begin by drawing the general shape of the irregular land. Mark the boundary's important locations, or vertices.

  • Divide into Triangles: Within the shape, draw lines to divide it into triangles. Make sure the triangles completely enclose the area and do not overlap.

  • Measure Triangle Dimensions: Determine the base and matching height lengths for every triangle. You can drop a perpendicular line from the opposite vertex to the base if height is not directly quantifiable.

  • Determine the Area of Every Triangle: Apply the equation A = 1/2 × b × h. Compute this for every triangle separately.

  • Sum the Areas: To determine the overall size of the irregular terrain, add the areas of each triangle.

This is how to measure irregular plot area.  Hope this information helps!

My father owns an irregular shaped plot. To know the entire cost of the plot and compare it with others, it was important for us to understand how to calculate square feet of land with uneven sides. I’ll be happy to share the steps that we followed in this regard.

How to Calculate Land Area with Different Sides?

Select a Measurement Unit:

Make sure that feet or metres are used for all measurements.

Divide the Land into Shapes:

To make computations easier, divide irregular land into shapes like rectangles, triangles, and so on.

Measure every segment:

Measure the width and length of each area using a measuring tape.

Determine Each Section's Area:

In the case of squares or rectangles, multiply length by width. Use the formula (base * height) / 2 for triangles.

Sum up:

To find the overall land area in square feet, add the areas of each segment together.

Before adding up the areas of complicated shapes, divide them up into simpler shapes and compute their individual areas. You can follow these steps to help you with how to calculate area of uneven land.

If you have an irregularly shaped land and you are wondering how to calculate the area of irregular land, then you’re in luck. I can tell you how to measure irregular land because I learnt this just a few months back and I have used the methods myself.

If the land that you own has a regular shape like that of a rectangle or a triangle, then you can easily calculate the area for it. But often it happens that the land is not in a fixed geometrical shape. Let me share a few irregular shapes of land and tell you how to calculate uneven land area.

How to measure uneven land?

Type 1: If two sides of the plot are parallel to each other and all of the 4 sides o the plot have different lengths. The 4 sides can be named A, B, C, and D.

Given data:

Side AD (a ) =  16.105m.

Side BC (b ) = 10m.

Side AB = 7m.

Side CD = 6.5m.

Side AD & BC of the land are parallel to each other.

The perpendicular distance between the side AD & BC ( h ) = 6m.

The area of the land is calculated by the formula

= 1/2 × ( a + b ) × h

= 1/2 × (side AD + side BC ) × Perpendicular distance

= 1/2 × ( 16.105m + 10m ) × 6m

= 1/2 ×  26.105 m ×6m

= 78.315 sqm.

Type 2: If the two sides of the plot are parallel to each other and one side is perpendicular to the parallel sides. This means that sides AD & BC are parallel and DC is perpendicular to them.

Given data:

Side AD (a ) =  13.6m.

Side BC (b ) = 10m.

Side AB = 7m.

Side CD ( h)= 6m.

Side AD & BC of the land are parallel to each other.

The area of the land is calculated by the formula

= 1/2 × ( a + b ) × h

= 1/2 × (side AD + side BC ) × side DC

= 1/2 × ( 13.6m + 10m ) × 6m

= 1/2 ×  23.6 m ×6m

= 70.8 sqm.

I hope now you know

I have purchased the land in Delhi NCR which is in a parallelogram shape. As you know, the area of a regular land plot can be easily calculated, but the area of an irregular land shape can be more challenging to calculate. I have used an irregular land area calculator to find the area of my plot in square feet. Moreover, I learned that one of the simplest ways to find the area is to divide the land into simpler shapes like triangles, rectangles, and circles. Let me help you out with the easiest steps to calculate.

How to calculate irregular plot area?

You can look through Fredrick Dsouza or Divyesh Singh's responses to learn how to figure out how big an irregular plot is. They did a good job of explaining the steps. But you must follow the below steps if you have the land in an irregular shape like a parallelogram:

  • Measure all sides of irregular shapes.

  • Ensure all the measurements are done in a similar unit (feet, centimeters, meters, inches, or any other unit).

  • Using the measurements you took, sketch the area on a sheet of paper. Keep in mind that your drawing is scaled.

  • Divide it into easy shapes like squares or rectangles, as circles and triangles may be a little more challenging.

  • Now find the area of each of the divided shapes.

    • For a rectangle, use the formula: Area = length x breadth

    • For a square, use the formula: Area = (length of sides)^

      2

    • For a triangular, use the formula: Area = ½ x base x height

    • For a circle, Area =  3.14 x (radius from the center of land to any edge of land)^

      2

  •  Once you've done that, you can add up each of these separate areas to get the total area calculation of irregular land.

  • Finally, convert the result into square feet by using the square feet calculator.

If you are finding the area using a calculator, then you just need to multiply the base and height of the plot. Hope you got an idea of how to calculate area of irregular shape land such as parallelograms.

How to calculate area of irregular plot?

You can refer to Fredrick Dsouza’s answer to know about calculating the area of an irregular plot. He explained it very well. But you can consider the following points to calculate the area.

1) First, you need to break down the irregular shapes into recognisable shapes that can help you locate the area of the irregular shape.

2) Then you must be able to break down irregular shapes like triangles, rectangles or squares.

3) Then you can find the area of a regular shape by subdividing the irregular shape into several regular shapes

4) Next, you need to add all of the regular shape areas to determine the irregular shape areas.

How can you calculate the area of an uneven shape?

Area evaluation using unit squares:

This method can be applied to irregular shapes and objects with curves other than spherical shapes or semi-circles. In this procedure, you must divide the shape first into unit squares. The total area is calculated using all of the unit squares that are contained within the Shape.

This way you will know how to calculate area of irregular land.
