Hello. I got my office painted just a while back. I have a one-room space for my office in the porch area of my house. I wanted to find out the painting quantity calculation to know the cost of the work. I did so with the help of a quick method by myself. Let me share it with you.

How to calculate paint quantity in liters?

  1. Start by measuring the dimensions of your room. This will help in calculating the total square footage of the room. Get a measuring tape and calculate the length and height of the four walls. Also, take 2-3 extra measurements to ensure that you have measured correctly.

  2. Next, multiply the length and height of each wall to get the area. Add the areas of the four walls to get a rough estimate of the surface area that you need to paint.

  3. Now, calculate the area of all the windows and doors in the room. Do so by calculating the length and height of each and then multiplying them.

  4. Subtract the total area of the doors and windows from the total area of the four walls. This will give you the square footage of your room, which is to be painted. You can double it if you wish to paint two coats.

  5. Now, you need to find out the coverage of the paint you’re using. In general, a litre of paint offers coverage of 130 square feet. But, you must find it out for your paint.

  6. At last, here is the paint quantity calculation formula: The surface area to be painted / the coverage of the paint per litre.

I hope my answer helps you learn how to calculate paint quantity for wall.

We were unsure about how to calculate paint quantity so we consulted with a painter to get the value. There are some calculations you need to do to get the exact amount so let me share it with you in my comment.

How to Calculate Paint Quantity for Building?

To calculate the paint quantity for a building, you will need to have:

  • Room Shape and Wall Dimensions: Measure the height and width of each wall. Multiply to get the total square footage. For example, a 10 feet high and 12 feet wide wall is 120 square feet. Total square footage = height x width.

  • Windows and Doors: Measure the height and width of each window and door, and subtract this from the total square footage.

  • Ceiling Paint: If painting the ceiling, calculate its square footage and add it to the total.

  • Number of Coats: Multiply the total square footage by the number of coats needed, usually two.

This is how to estimate paint quantity. You can seek a professional’s aid to find the exact amount or calculate it yourself by following the steps I mentioned above.

What is 1500 sq ft House paint cost?

Last year, I hired a painter to paint my living room. Before going to the paint store to buy paint cans, I asked the painter, “how to calculate quantity of paint for a room?” He helped me with the calculation. I can share the same with you all.

How to Calculate Amount of Paint?

  • Measure:

He first measured my living room wall’s length (10 ft), and height of the room (7 ft).

  1. Room’s perimeter: 10+10+10+10= 40 feet

  2. Room’s surface area: 40x7 = 280 sq. ft

Now he also measured that the window and door have a surface area of 15 square feet and 20 square feet, respectively.

  1. Paint-free surface area = 20 + 15 = 35 square feet

  2. Area total paintable (280 - 35) = 245 square feet

The painter informed me that depending on the number of coats applied to interior walls, one litre of paint can cover 130 square feet.

The necessary paint quantity is 245/130= 1.8-2 litres.

As a result, I was required to get two litres of paint to paint my living room with the above-given size. Depending on how many coats of paint are applied to interior walls, you can also use this method to determine how much paint is needed to paint a wall.

How much Paint Required for 2BHK?

The quantity of paint required depends on the factors like the dimension of the room, paint quality, coats of paint and the nature of the walls. Sometimes you have to apply primer before painting the wall. So it can vary according to that also. The quantity of paint you'll require relies on the wall's dryness and how many layers you'll need to reach complete clarity. Unless the colour is the same, one layer of paint is usually enough to create a satisfactory finish. Otherwise, you need to apply primer before changing the colour. Let’s see how to calculate paint quantity.

How to calculate paint quantity in India:

Consider the following example: a 16 ft. x 18 ft. room with a 10 ft. ceiling height.

Dimensions of front and rear walls = 16 ft X 10 ft

Dimensions of two sidewalls = 18 ft 10 ft

Dimensional ceilings = 16 ft X 18 ft

A single door measuring 3 ft x 8 ft

4 ft X 5 ft is the size of one window.

A single layer will cover between 260 and 300 square feet per litre.

A double layer will cover 130 to 150 square feet per litre.

First, we'll figure out how much Tractor emulsion should cover the overall area of the room.

The room's total painting area

= [walls area + ceiling area - doors and windows area]

= [2 numbers of side walls + 2 numbers of front and rear walls + 1 number of ceiling - 1number of door + 1number of window]

= [2 X 18ft X 10ft + 2 X 16ft X 10ft + 16ft X 18ft - 3ft X 8ft + 4ft X 5ft]

= [360 sq. ft. + 320 sq. ft. + 288 sq. ft. - 24 sq. ft. + 20 sq. ft

= [968 square feet - 44 square feet]

= 924 square feet

The total amount of paint needed

= total painting area/paint coverage per litre

For a single layer of painting,

924 sq ft / 270 sq ft = 3.42 litres required

For a double layer of painting,

924 sq ft / 150 sq ft = 6.16 litres required

I hope you understood how to calculate paint quantity.
