The calculation of plot area is important for government authorities as well as the owners of the land. The government needs this data as a part of land survey whereas the owners need to know this information to determine the exact land area they have and finally utilize it in the best way possible. Anyway, the process is not that simple and a lot of math and formulas go into it. I am going to share with you the ways on how to calculate plot area here so bear with me. How to measure plot area? If only plots were cut according to the usual geometrical shapes, it would have been really convenient to put the formula and values in place and calculate the plot area. But this is not so. The plots are usually found in the following shapes:
  • Square or rectangular plots
  • Irregular polygon plots
  • Triangular plots
If you are lucky enough to have a square or rectangular plot, then the calculations will be really simple. Here is how that could be done: Square plot Area = (length x length)  So the calculation will be: suppose the length of the plot is 30 feet then the area will Area of a square plot = (30 x 30) Area of a square plot = 900 feet   Rectangular plot area = length x breadth Suppose the length of your plot is 30 feet and breadth is 20 feet then the area will be: Area of rectangular plot = Length x Breadth Area of rectangular plot = 30 x 20 Area of rectangular plot = 600 feet   Triangular plot area = Area = √(s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)) Here s is half the perimeter of the triangle, and a, b,c are sides Suppose a plot has three sides measuring the length of 14m, 24m and 18m respectively. Here is how you will calculate the area of a triangular plot. Area of triangular plot = √(s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)) S = (a+b+c)/2 S = (14+24+18)/2 s= 28 Area of triangular plot = √(28(28-14)(28-24)(28-18)) = √(28(14)(4)(10)) = √(28(14)(4)(10)) = √15680 = 125.2 m, i.e., 1347.6 feet Area of irregular polygon plot If your plot has an irregular polygon shape then you will have to draw a map of it and divide the area in legible shapes and calculate the area of each polygon. Once you have all the values, just add them up. I hope now we are clear about how to calculate plot area.

The process of calculating the area of a plot is very simple. I came to know about the steps while trying to measure my plot before selling. You must be wondering why I didn’t check the property papers for that. Well, I just wanted to learn the process, and I figured it's best to do it on my property. So, how to calculate the area of a plot? The very first step is to ensure that the measurements are in the same unit; I used square feet.

How to Calculate Plot Area in Square Feet?

As I mentioned above, I calculated the area of my plot in square feet. Following that, the next step is to divide the land into shapes, such as rectangles and triangles. This applies to irregular plots, as this makes the whole process much easier. Here are the rest of the steps that you need to follow.

  • Now, use a measuring tape and start measuring the length and breadth of each section.

  • After that, calculate the area of each section. For the rectangle section, use the formula Length x Breadth and for triangles, use the formula Base x Height/2.

  • Finally, add all the area to get the whole area of the plot.

This is how to calculate area of plot of land. Hope this helps.

How To Calculate Irregular Land Area in Square Feet?

Before understanding how to measure area of land, I’d like to say that the units used for measuring land area in different states of India vary. Sq. feet is the common unit of measurement for residential plots and acres for agricultural property.

How to Measure the Land Area in Square Feet?

Residential property areas are often expressed in square feet. Simply measure the length and width in feet. That's all. The size of the land can then be calculated by multiplying the length in feet by the breadth in feet.

Length (in feet) x width (in feet) = area in sq. ft.

How to Measure Land Dimensions of an Irregular Plot?

  • Divide irregular land into rectangles, triangles, and other shapes to facilitate computations.

  • Using a measuring tape, determine the width and length of each region.

  • For squares and rectangles, multiply width by length. For triangles, use the formula (base * height) / 2.

  • Add the areas of all the segments together to get the total land area in square feet.

I hope this information helps!

If you are planning to build a property on a piece of land, it is necessary to know the area of the plot and then decide the flat area and number of rooms accordingly. I also did not know how to calculate land area until I had my own house constructed. The formula is not the same for all plot sizes. If you want to know how to measure a plot of land, you have to learn the formulas first. Let me share the main formulas here:

How to calculate area of plot?

To calculate the area of a plot, these formulas are to be followed:

Rectangular or Square Land Parcel:
  • Measure the length (L) and width (W) of the land in feet or metres.

  • Multiply the length by the width to find the area: Area = L × W square units (e.g., square feet or square metres).

Triangular Land Parcel:
  • Measure the base (B) and the height (H) of the triangle in feet or metres.

  • Multiply the base by the height and divide by 2 to find the area: Area = (B × H) / 2 square units.

Circular Land Parcel:
  • Measure the radius (R) of the circle in feet or metres.

  • Use the formula: Area = π × R^2, where π (pi) is approximately 3.14159. The result is in square units.

Irregular Land Parcel:
  • Divide the parcel into smaller, simpler shapes like rectangles, triangles, and circles.

  • Calculate the area of each smaller shape using the appropriate method.

  • Sum up the areas of all the smaller shapes to find the total land area.

This is how to calculate plot size based on the shape of the plot.
