I have been in Delhi for some years now and I always paid water bills and wondered why it’s so high but never really thought about the process of calculation. So, I asked my father how to calculate Delhi Jal Board bill. He lived here for around five years and he explained to me the entire thing. I also got to know a few insights from their official website.

How is Delhi Jal Board Bill Calculated?

It is only recently that I understood the importance of knowing this process as you will have better clarity and ensure your bills are correct. Before doing the calculations, you should first know the charges raised in the water bill.

  • Water Consumption Charges: This is based on volumetric consumption of water on a monthly basis.

  • Service Charges: This one is fixed access charges as per the slabs.

  • Sewerage Maintenance Charge: This is 60% of water consumption charge.

  • Metre Rent: This is applicable only if the metre has been installed by the DJB.

  • Surcharge: If the payment is not done within the required time. 5% surcharge is levied if the payment is not made within the stipulated time.

I am also sharing the rates of water consumption charges on the basis of monthly consumption below for domestic connections.

  • Up to 20 KL: Service charge - Rs. 146.41 and Volumetric charge - Rs. 5.27

  • 20-30 KL: Service charges - Rs. 219.82 and Volumetric charge - Rs 26.36

  • Above 30 KL: Service charge - Rs. 292.82 and Volumetric charge - Rs. 43.93

Please note that the sewer maintenance charges will be 60% of the water volumetric charges. This is what I have understood about the calculation of the DJB water bill. I hope this gives you a fair idea on how is Delhi Jal Board bill calculated.

In the year 2013, the Delhi Government introduced a flagship scheme. Under this, they started the provision of providing their consumers with 20 kilolitres of water for free every month. If someone exceeds this limit, then they’ll be charged for the quantity consumed above the 20 kilolitres mark.

I read a few of the answers that were published earlier. Since that time, rates have changed a bit. I Have extracted this information from the board’s official website. You can find the rates below.

It is very important to understand the multiple components that contribute to the total cost required while calculating the water bill in Delhi. You must know the water use rate, which is the fee payable per liter of water consumed. This fee changes depending on whether the consumer is residential, commercial, or industrial. This rate is decided by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and is updated on a regular basis. Scroll down to know 1 unit of water equals how many liters in Delhi Jal Board.

Delhi Jal Board Water Charges per Unit

Sunaina has provided the old water charges in Delhi above. As per the latest charges, the Delhi Jal Board 1 unit price is Rs 27. This includes Rs 12.3 for consumption, Rs 7.38 for servers, and Rs 7.33 as a service charge. Let’s check out the latest rate for domestic or residential categories below:

5.27

20-30

219.62

Above 30

The formula for calculating water rate in Delhi is as follows:

Total Water Bill (P) = M + 1.6 BX

where M is the minimum service charge, B is block tariff rates per KL, and X is the unit consumption in KL.

You must also consider other fees like sewerage, service fees, and meter rent to find the Delhi Jal Board per unit rate. The cost of meter installation, maintenance, and management is covered by service fees. For proper computations, it is crucial to read and comprehend the bill completely. I hope you found this helpful.
