Recently, I had an unexpected issue with my fan. It started running slowly and created a weird humming noise as it ran. I inspected it thoroughly and couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it until my brother told me it might be the capacitor. I needed to change that. But I didn’t know how to change a capacitor in a ceiling fan, so I looked it up and found that you can actually change the capacitor of your fan by following the below simple steps.

How to Change Capacitor in Ceiling Fan?

  • To be safe, I first cut the electricity at the circuit breaker.

  • I then took out the light kit and fan blades to get to the capacitor. I carefully unplugged the old capacitor by cutting the wires that were attached to it, as per the instructions I saw.

  • I then verified that the microfarad ratings of the new and old capacitors were the same. I attached the new capacitor wires to the right terminals, blue to blue and red to red.

  • Several sources I read emphasised the need to use electrical tape and wire nuts for secure connections. I put the fan back together and switched the power back on when everything was connected.

I was happy to see the fan operated properly. It took approximately 3 hours to complete the whole thing. So, I would suggest you better hire a professional electrician. I hope you get an idea of how to replace a capacitor in a ceiling fan.

A ceiling fan capacitor is an electrical component that stores and regulates electrical energy to control the fan's speed and direction. People wonder how to change ceiling fan capacitor but it is not that hard. To change a ceiling fan capacitor, you will need to turn off the power, open the fan casing, disconnect and replace the old capacitor with a new one, ensure proper wire connections, and then reassemble the fan and restore power to test its operation. Let me share the detailed steps here.

How to Change Capacitor in Ceiling Fan?

Changing a ceiling fan capacitor is a simple process, but it should be done with caution. Here are the steps to replace a ceiling fan capacitor:

  • At first, make sure the power to the fan is turned off at the circuit breaker or by unplugging it.

  • Remove the fan cover or canopy to access the internal components.

  • Locate the capacitor within the fan housing. It typically has two or more wires connected to it.

  • Carefully note the wiring connections to the capacitor and disconnect them. You may need to use a screwdriver to loosen the wire terminals.

  • Unscrew or unclip the old capacitor from its mounting bracket.

  • Insert the new capacitor into the same bracket and secure it in place.

  • Reconnect the wires to the new capacitor following the notes you made earlier. Ensure a snug connection.

  • Put the fan cover or canopy back in place.

  • Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker or plug the fan back in.

  • Turn on the fan to make sure it operates smoothly at different speeds. If the fan doesn't work correctly, double-check your connections or consult a professional for further assistance.

However, please do not even think of doing it yourself if you are not an expert. Hire an electrician to do the task for you. I hope you now have an idea about how to change ceiling fan capacitor.
