Before knowing how to check TAN number, let me tell you that the Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) is a unique ten-digit alphanumeric code issued by the Income Tax Department of India. It is essential for entities responsible for deducting or collecting tax at source (TDS/TCS).

How Do I Know My TAN Number?

Checking your TAN number is crucial for ensuring compliance with tax regulations. Here’s how you can verify your TAN:

Using the Income Tax Department’s Website

  • Visit the

official website of the Income Tax Department of India

and navigate to the ‘Know TAN Details’ section.

  • Then click on TAN search by name and select the Category of Deductor, the category under which TAN is registered, Name of Deductor, State, Mobile Number

  • Finally, click on the continue button. Make sure to fill in the required fields accurately and submit the form. Upon submission, the system will process your request and display the TAN details if they are available. You can see the TAN number along with other relevant details, such as the status of the deductor.

Alternate Methods

  • If you have previously received TDS certificates (Form 16 or Form 16A), the TAN is usually printed on these documents. You can check these forms to find your TAN.

  • Additionally, you can contact your employer or the entity that deducts tax on your behalf, as they are required to have and share this information.

I hope this answers your query, how can I know my TAN number.
