A gratuity is a one-time payment made to an employee after a specified period of service. My father also claimed his gratuity amount when he resigned from the company. It is given as a token of appreciation for the employee's lengthy service. Gratuity is usually provided at the time of retirement, although it can also be requested when changing jobs when a specified amount of time has passed (5 years). The Payment of Gratuity Act of 1972 governs the payment of this benefit. Although it is due at retirement, based on the terms and conditions, it may be paid to the employee in advance.
