How to Shine Copper Utensils?

  • Make a Paste:

To make a thick paste, combine a tiny amount of pitambari powder with a few drops of water. A toothpaste-like consistency should characterise the paste.

  • Apply the Paste:

Spread the Pitambari paste evenly over the copper utensil's surface using a soft cloth or sponge. Make sure the surface is completely covered.

  • Gently clean:

Use the paste to gently clean the utensil, paying special attention to any tarnished or soiled areas. To get rid of the tarnish and bring back the lustre, use circular motions.

  • Add Lemon or Tamarind:

Rub the utensil with a bit of tamarind or lemon juice, as desired. By doing this, the copper becomes even more brightened and helps to remove tough stains.

  • Thoroughly Rinse:

Use water to thoroughly rinse the copper utensil to get rid of any remaining cleaning paste or lemon/tamarind odour.

  • Dry and Buff:

To completely dry the utensil, use a clean, dry cloth or paper towels. To enhance the shine, buff the surface.

  • Finishing touch:

As a finishing touch, dab a cloth lightly with cooking oil before rubbing it over the copper surface to add shine.

  • Storage:

To prevent tarnishing, keep your cleaned copper cookware in a dry location.

Hi friend,

I have a great affinity for copper utensils because it makes my kitchenware look so vintage yet elegant. Even though we do not use our copper utensils for our day-to-day meals, we need to clean them from time to time. We Indians have a habit of decorating our beautiful utensils and kitchenware in cupboards for show and use them only on special occasions. And that is why we are generally not aware of

how to clean copper utensils or any other fancy kitchenware since we don’t use them on a regular basis. And not knowing how to wash copper utensils properly may damage those beautiful sets for you.

I recently learned some tips and tricks from my grandmother on how to clean copper utensils and I’d be happy to share them with you.

  1. Using soap and water for cleaning: The first task at hand is to clean the copper utensils that you have with soap and water. You can use any dishwasher soap and a soft sponge to wash the utensils. This step serves as the initial cleaning base for the further cleaning process to take place.

  2. Polish the Copper Utensils: Polishing copper utensils is as important as cleaning them. Polishing is necessary because the surface of the copper utensils tarnish with time and may lose its lustre and smoothness. So my grandma suggested that I should polish my copper at least once every six months with a cleaner especially made for copper utensils or make homemade copper cleaning solutions.

  3. Baking soda and lemon juice can be mixed and applied on the copper surface in circular motions with a soft and clean cloth to clean and polish the utensils. This is the perfect solution to how to clean copper utensils at home.

  4. Ketchup is another very useful trick for cleaning copper. It can be rubbed over the copper surface and the acidic value of the tomato in the ketchup will help remove the tarnish from copper utensils.

  5. You can also use lemon and salt over the copper surface and rinse and dry the utensils

  6. Vinegar and salt do the task for you too.

This was my (and my grandmother’s) take on

how to clean copper utensils. Do tell me if these tips prove to be useful to you.
