Firstly you need to check the pH level of the water. The pH level should be between 7.4 and 7.6. The chlorine level should be between 2.0 and 4.0. Empty the skimmer and check the pressure filter as well. 

Check if there are any dead spots in the pool such as cracks, crevices, and creases on the liner. If there are algae in the pool you need to remove them. Install return jets and keep a pool brush handy to circulate the water manually.

Make sure that there are no tree branches falling or nesting insects under the top rail. If there is pecking wildlife at ground level you should think of removing it as well.

Even if you don't intend to use the pool you should run your pump and filter for 12 to 18 hours daily. The two components help to keep the water clean. The pool pump pulls the water into the filter and separates the clean water from accumulated dirt and debris.

Patch the holes or pinholes as soon as you spot them. You can buy a pool patch kit including an underwater pool liner to fix this issue.
