My mother shared with me the best way on how clean velvet sofa. She advised using a baby shampoo and warm water solution. If you do not have that, you can use an upholstery cleaner or dishwashing solution. Just make sure the solution does not damage the sofa.

How do You Clean Velvet Sofa?

Velvet sofas need extra care while cleaning. Here is a simple answer to your query: how to clean my velvet sofa:

  • Shake and Brush: Start by shaking the cushions to get rid of loose dirt. Use a soft brush or a lint roller to gently remove any dust or debris from the sofa.

  • Make a Gentle Cleaner: Mix warm water with a little non-foaming upholstery cleaner or baby shampoo. Then dip a microfiber cloth in the solution.

  • Detect the Stains: Gently blot any stains with the damp cloth, being careful not to rub too hard. Then test the cleaner in a hidden spot first to make sure it’s safe.

  • Wipe the Sofa: Lightly wipe the entire sofa with the damp cloth, following the direction of the velvet’s fibres.

  • Dry the Sofa: Let the sofa air dry and once it’s dry, use a soft brush to fluff the velvet, brushing in the direction of the fibres to keep it smooth and soft.

This is how to clean and take care of your velvet sofa. This works absolutely well for me so I hope you will get the same result.

I had a first-hand experience of what happens when you don't clean your velvet sofa. A friend of mine spilled some chutney on my sofa and I ignored it. The next thing I know, I have a permanent stain on that spot. I learned about how to clean velvet sofa but nothing helped. I had to get it changed. Something similar happened and this time I was ready. Here is what I did.

How Do You Clean a Velvet Couch?

From all the research I did after my first mistake, I learned that whenever there is spill on velvet sofas, you should always act fast. Here is what I did, when it happened again.

  • I grabbed a clean and dry cloth and started blotting the area repeatedly. I continued to do this till the spill was been completely dried out and made sure to blot gently without scrubbing. Also made sure to move the cloth around when one area got wet.

  • Next, I grabbed a bowl and filled it with 2 - 3 cups of lukewarm water, added a few drops of unscented dish soap, and mixed it properly.

  • Then, I soaked a clean microfibre cloth in the solution and tested the solution in an area of the sofa where people wouldn’t notice. I waited a few minutes to check if there was any reaction. There wasn't any.

  • I soaked the cloth in the solution again and then wrung it properly. Then gently rub the areas 3 - 4 times.

And that’s how to clean velvet couch. After the process, I left it for 30-60 minutes before using it.

I hope these steps about how to clean velvet sofa at home will be of help to you.
