I use my ironing board a lot so the iron board cover got damaged. I had to get a new ironing board cover and I was about to buy a costly cover online. My mom suggested that I should DIY the iron cover since I know how to sew well. I liked her idea and I took out a cotton cloth which had beautiful flowers printed on it. Cotton is a good quality fabric and it is perfect for ironing. You can also buy heat-resistant fabric to DIY your ironing board cover. I will share an easy guide on how to cover an ironing board. To DIY iron board cover, you will need:
100% cotton
fabric marker
seam gauge
scissors
pins
matching thread
sewing machine
pressing iron
elastic – optional
safety pin
Place the cotton fabric on the floor on the opposite side.
Take the string from the old cover to attach it to the new one. You can also use elastic as an alternative.
Take the old cover and place it on the new fabric lying on the floor.
Take a seam gauge and trace around the old cover adding a 2-inch allowance.
Cut out by checking the mark.
Hem the new cover using a needle and a thread.
When you are about to end, leave a small gap.
Backstitch the fabric from start to end.
Use a safety pin and thread the elastic or string into the casing.
In case you are using elastic, you can sew the gap now. If you are using the string you should leave the gap open.
Tie the string and place the new cover on the ironing board.
Smooth down the cover to eliminate wrinkles. Press it well and spread the cover evenly on the ironing board.
I hope you enjoyed what I have explained about the ironing board cover.
