When I purchased a new flat a few months ago, I noticed that there were open shelves in my kitchen which I didn’t really like. I needed to cover them somehow and make them look functional and organised, yet aesthetically pleasing. So I started looking up how to cover kitchen shelves without doors. Here are a few methods I found that might help you out, like using decorative baskets or colourful wallpaper.

How to Cover Open Kitchen Shelves?

Here are a few ideas I came across:

  • Removing cabinet doors from existing cabinets was one efficient way I discovered to refresh the appearance of my kitchen and also display necessary things like dishes and glassware. This minor change gave the space a feeling of openness and made it feel airy.

  • I also found I could use decorative baskets to arrange things on the shelves. I could keep everything accessible and maintain a clutter-free look by putting related objects in these baskets.

  • I also thought of painting or applying colourful wallpaper as backdrops, which I thought would give the shelves a fresh look and make the things stand out.

  • I could also use the open kitchen shelves and transform them into an open pantry, which would maximise the space while also organising a lot of my kitchen stuff. I would also easily be able to tell where everything is without it being messy.

These are some fixes I found online, which I thought might help you as well. I finally consulted a professional interior designer from NoBroker and he covered my open kitchen shelves beautifully.

You might consider me a bad mom but I really did not want my kids to eat all the snacks one at a time. My elder daughter is just seven years old and is very smart. Every time she saw the chips packets, she would ask me to give her some. Our kitchen shelves did not have doors so I started looking for methods on how to cover shelves without doors. There are many ways and for me, it was so very helpful. You can implement them too. Here are some methods on how to cover open kitchen shelves.

How to Cover Open Bookshelves or Cabinets?

To cover any open shelf, you can:

  • Hang curtains or drapes on a tension rod to cover open shelves. Choose fabrics that match your room's decor.

  • Use fabric panels with hook-and-loop fasteners. Attach the fabric to the back or sides of the shelves for a decorative cover.

  • Place decorative baskets or bins on the shelves to hide the contents. Labels can help with organisation.

  • Install transparent or frosted glass or acrylic sheets to maintain visibility while protecting items from dust.

  • Suspend a tension rod between the shelf posts and hang a fabric curtain to provide a clean look.

  • Hang artwork or framed prints in front of the shelves to create an attractive, functional cover.

  • Position decorative screens or room dividers in front of the shelves to block the view.

These are some really cool and budget-friendly

ways to cover open shelves.

I have a confession.

I love open kitchens. I love the idea of not being boxed in a room. I love that I can socialize with family and friends. I love that they come running to my kitchen to grab that quirky jar I bought on a store sale. I love that my family comes running to the kitchen to whip up meals to the counter.

I have an open kitchen with uncovered shelves and I find it beautiful. It makes things easy for me. Everything is out there and accessible for all of us. Besides all that, it is a great reminder to indulge in the regular cleaning as well, haha!

Anyway, enough of my rant here. Since you are asking how to cover open shelves in kitchen, I can share a couple of great ideas with you.

Hang curtains

Of course, I won’t suggest that to be done near a stove or a heavy electrical item. But you can definitely consider this idea if you are planning to cover shelves with your grocery, pantry or cutlery. You can simply hang a curtain which blends well with the kitchen wall colour and overall aesthetic.

Install sliding doors

You can find and install sliding doors if you are looking for an answer to how to

cover kitchen shelves without doors. You can get glass doors with frosted glass look or simply go for plastic door sliders. They are easy to install (some even detachable). You can look them up online as well.

Use metal sheet lining

You can cut the metal to fit the size of your cabinet, smoothen the sharp edges, add handles and simply hang them on the side. You can paint them in the colours you want. The best thing is that they are water resistant and make for an excellent cover.

I hope my ideas don’t seem bizarre to you. This is

how to cover open shelves in kitchen in my opinion. Easy and economical.
