Although open shelves are in trend these days but some people prefer to keep them covered. It would be inconvenient to many to keep everything out in the open for everyone to witness. So how to cover shelves without doors? I am going to tell you 3 easy ways by which you can hide your shelves and still maintain a decent décor.

Bring in curtains

I know, you must be thinking curtains are for doors and windows, why would you suggest that. Trust me, it would be an amazing idea. You can pick out curtains and cover the shelves entirely. You can either install a curtain rod or use a spring tension rod. By hanging curtains, you’ll be able to cover up the clutter.

Hang paintings

If you have open bookshelves and you wish to cover them now then hanging paintings in front of them as a cover would be a great idea. You yourself can paint a few paces to give them a personalized touch.

I was looking for DIY methods to cover my disarranged bookshelf in my bedroom. It’s an open shelf that collects dust daily and is difficult to clean because of many items stored on the shelf. This mess not only makes the room less inviting but also causes a sudden increase in my dust allergies. I was concerned about how to cover open shelf to hide the clutter. After looking at different options, I found the best solution to keep my bookshelf clean and organised.

Here are some easy ways to make group the items and shield your shelf:

  • Folding Screen Wall: This movable screen can be placed in front of your messy shelf to hide it from view. This separates your living area from the storage space, making it look more clean.

  • Window Shades:

If your shelves are attached to the wall, installing a roller shade or a fabric shade on the shelf front can hide the clutter. It is a creative idea because you can pull it down or roll it up when you need to access the shelves.

  • Storage Boxes:

Use different sized boxes to organise similar items together and label them for easy access. You can either paint or wallpaper the boxes to match your room decor, making the shelf look tidy.

  • Clustered Vases:

You can arrange a variety of vases with small sculptures or candles to improve the overall decor while keeping the clutter out of sight.

In my home, I have installed window shades. However, you can prevent overcrowded shelves by usefully creating a perfect space with these innovative ideas on how to cover an open shelf in your home.

Thank you Kritika you have shared some great shelf cover ideas. Ms. Unnati apart from what she has shared, I would like to add a couple of more ideas into the kitty. Perhaps when you are looking for a change, these can come in handy. Check them out below:

These 2 ideas are my absolute favourite. In fact, I have implemented them at my place and I am so proud.

Idea 1: Get Creeper Plants

Don’t be surprised. You can elaborate on this idea by picking out indoor creeper plants and placing them in pots. Keep them on the shelves and let their long and thin stems do the job. This idea is the best in my opinion as it introduces greenery into your home, has a fresh vibe to it and most importantly, it is inexpensive.

Idea 2: Install Frosted Glass

If you don’t know how to cover shelf without a door, you can opt for a frosted glass. You will have ample choices in design, shape and quality. I advise you to go for cracked theme sliding frosted glass. It is convenient and lasts longer (Unless you have naughty kids at home). This option will require little investment but it is one of the safest bets.
