Hey,

An inevitable part of renting a property is dealing with the landlords. We get to choose the property which we want to rent but we don't get to choose the landlords. Sometimes we get stuck with landlords that we don't necessarily agree with. I will share tips on how to deal with a difficult landlord.

Paying your rent, electricity bill, and water bill amongst other bills should be your number 1 priority. A difficult landlord will appreciate that the bills are being paid on time and cut the tenant some slack.

Practice being a good tenant:

Imbibe practices of a good tenant to ensure the landlord does not have reasons to criticise anything. Keep the property clean, be respectful of the property, call the landlord only when necessary, not play loud music- late at night etc.

  Know your rights:

Familiarise yourself with the terms and conditions mentioned in your rental agreement. Get to know the laws of the ‘Model Tenancy Act as well. Knowing the law will help you protect yourself against unnecessary situations.

Documentation:

Document the ever-changing condition of your house. eg. If you spot any seepage or mould, simply click a picture/ make a video for documentation and proof. Communicate details about the repairs that need fixes. You can point back to the documented - conversation if needed.
