As I prepare my own home for the festival of lights, here are some personal insights into the process of how to decorate your home in Diwali. Decorating your home for Diwali is a joyous and cherished tradition.

How to Decorate Your House for Diwali?

  • Rangoli:

I begin by making vibrantly coloured rangoli patterns at my doorstep using flower petals, coloured rice, or even coloured powders. They stand for a cordial welcome.

  • Diya Decor:

Oil lamps known as Diyas are a key component of the decor. I put them all over my house, especially by windows and doors, to shine light and create happiness.

  • Fairy lights and candles:

To make the environment more festive, I hang string lights and set out fragrant candles.

  • Fresh flowers:

Marigolds and roses, in particular, offer a wonderful touch. I use garlands and floral arrangements to decorate my living areas.

  • Artwork and Wall Hangings:

I also decorate my home with tapestries, wall hangings, and traditional Indian artwork.

  • Torans:

To give the entrance a regal and festive appearance, I hang ornate torans or door hangings.

  • New Decor and Linens:

Place new cushions, curtains, and tablecloths in bright, festive colours.

  • Festival of Sweets:

A significant component of Diwali decor is the preparation and presentation of a wide assortment of traditional sweets in elaborate containers.

  • Eco-Friendly Celebrations:

While highlighting tips on how to decorate room for Diwali, I’d like to emphasise the usage of natural materials, avoiding plastic, and eco-friendly decor.

When you decorate for Diwali, you should focus on creating a space that exudes love, light, and positive energy as well as aesthetic appeal. I treasure every second of it.

Hope this helps you with how to decorate your house in Diwali.

How to decorate house for diwali

Once you have all the supplies ready you can start with the decorations. Here are the tips I religiously follow:

  • Start with the Pooja room of the house. Clean it and make sure nothing gathers dust or is broken in there. You can start by hanging some genda phool malas and even hang some string lights. I make sure that my pooja room has lakshmi feet impressions and a small rangoli. Leave some space for diyas as well. Apart from all of these I add definition with some silver and brass utensils which complement the overall decor and can also be used as holders for prasad.

  • Next, I move on to the outer part of the house. I like to keep it basic with a combination of yellow and white string lights. They hang down till the end of the building. I should tell you it is aesthetically pleasing and a much easier arrangement.

  • Then I start with the decoration of the house. I like to keep it minimalistic hence just a few genda phool malas, a couple of door hangings do the trick for me.

  • Then comes the most exciting part; making rangoli. I spend a lot of time browsing through rangoli designs and then dedicate hours to perfect it. Undoubtedly this is my favourite task of the drill.

This pretty much sums up your answer to how to decorate home in diwali. I hope you find it helpful :)
