Janmashtami is a special occasion in Hindu households. People welcome home the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu with great joy and celebration. Not only in India but people beyond the country boundaries welcome the ‘Makhanchor’ home in a grand celebration. The celebration begins with decorating home. If you are someone who is looking for brilliant ideas on how to decorate mandir on janmashtami, this answer is for you.

I am sure if you have a plan to celebrate krishna janmashtami then you must have brought kanha ji home. To ensure he is happy and healthy you must know how to decorate mandir on janmashtami at home. Here are a few must haves from my list:

  1. Clean clothes

It is needless to say that when you bring home a deity, you must ensure that the place where you’ll keep them is clean, hygienic and has a fresh set of clothes present. Kanha ji must have a clean pair of clothes to don and for a personal touch, I stitch them by myself.

  1. Jhoola/palna or swing

The palna should be well washed and sparkling clean, you must spread a fresh pair of bedsheets, use flowers and other natural decorations. A happy, lively place is recommended. I prefer to use red, golden and orange shades for bedspreads.

  1. Floral decorations

Talking about natural decoration material, you can bring in fresh flowers from your garden or market and spread them in the palna. Besides, you can use them as decoration on the swing. If you want you can add fairy lights to make it even more beautiful and well lit.

  1. Bansuri and dahi handi

A krishna bhakt knows very well the importance of a bansuri and dahi handi on janmashtami festival. You must not let go of the opportunity to decorate his bansuri and make a miniature version of dahi handi. It is symbolic of the joy of the festivities.

I love to make janmashtami a beautiful and memorable one. As a ritual, I started dressing up my daughter as lord krishna and she sits in the pooja room and is mesmerized by the aura the deity has around her.

This is a personal preference of course, you can share your ideas with me too. I would love to know your views on how to decorate mandir on janmashtami at home.
