In 2019 I was in Delhi and I could not go back home for diwali celebration due to some urgent work requirements. I used to live with my flatmates in a rented apartment and all of them had left for their homes. It was a bit of a sad moment for me as I made it a point to be at home at least for Diwali but couldn’t make it this time. But I didn’t let that ruin my festival. I decided to celebrate and do the pooja on my own so I started looking for diwali room decoration ideas. I can share my experience with you, I hope you will have a wonderful diwali too.

How to decorate room for diwali?
  • I started off with the cleaning process because obviously what is the whole point of celebration and pooja if you don’t do it in a clean place.

  • Next, I brought in some essentials for decor such as fairy lights, lakshmi paav, rangoli colour (a lil bit), diyas and candles, idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, some fruits and sweets.

  • Once I had all my essentials ready, I placed a nice and clean bed sheet on the bed, cleared out the table and started making the pooja corner.

  • I hung fairy lights on the wall, made a small basic rangoli (trust me it was a couple of circles only) and yeah, I had a genda phool mala which I used to decorate my pooja table.

  • After placing everything as mom told me to, I went out on the balcony and hung the fairy lights.

  • I have a couple of house plants which I believe add a lot of value to my life and give me a sense of calmness so I brought them along the pooja ghar to add a natural element.

  • When everything was set, I video called my family and we performed the pooja together at our places. It was a surreal experience.

  • After performing pooja I placed diyas in my rangoli and the balcony with the candles. Everything was lit and bright.

This sounds really simple but trust me it was a fulfilling experience. If you are alone this Diwali don’t sit back, make the most of your time and make everything count. I hope my diwali decoration ideas are good enough for you.

Have a happy and safe Diwali :)
