I live in Mumbai but I have a property back in my hometown Deoria where we have an open terrace area. Lockdown gave me an opportunity to be there for a good 10 months and I did all I ever wanted with it. I wanted to amp up its looks and decor for so long but Mumbai to Deoria was quite a long journey so I didn’t slouch for even a bit when me and my husband headed back there. My first project was actually the terrace area. I had many ideas in my head on how to decorate terrace and almost 80% of it came to fruition. I am sharing the tips I learned in the whole process to decorate my terrace garden.
How to decorate terrace garden? Before we proceeded on this journey, it was important to take care of a few things beforehand. We scaled the area and dimensions properly, got all the trims and cleaning done. We have a couple of benches in our terrace garden already. We just had to get them painted again. Once all of this was done, this is what we opted for:
Green wallsWe got the frames installed in the walls and grew creepers like money plant and bougainvillea in old cans. This helped us in setting a green tone for our terrace garden. It looked dope.
Planters and potsTo compliment our green walls, we got some potted planters. Our maali bhai ji was kind enough to help us out in choosing the best all season plants.
Folding furnitureOur daddy ji is fond of those benches in the garden, so we thought we could get some folding furniture and sit with him in the terrace garden for our evening tea and snacks party. It turned out well. We made sure that the furniture and the benches were painted in the same colour.
Floor beds and pillowsWe have a shaded area as well in our terrace and we didn’t want to lose the opportunity to relive our childhood days. We spread the floor beds in that area and arranged colourful cushions, me and my MIL hung out there for almost 4-5 hours everyday. Such a good bonding time I tell you.
These were pretty much the highlights of my terrace. I also did some abstract paintings and hung them on the common wall of the room and terrace just to give a personalized touch.

A fun and practical idea for saving space is decorating a small terrace. Here are some straightforward simple terrace decoration ideas to maximise your small outdoor space.
What are the Best Small Terrace Decoration Ideas?
- Vertical Gardens:
To build a vertical garden, install shelves or pots that are mounted to the wall. This saves floor space in addition to adding flora.
- Furniture Selection:
Decide on space-saving furniture, such as folding chairs, stackable stools, or a small bistro set. To make moving around easier, choose lightweight materials.
- Cushions and Textiles:
Add softness and colour with outdoor cushions, throw pillows and rugs. They create a cozy atmosphere and can be easily switched out for a fresh look.
- Lighting:
To create a cosy atmosphere in the evenings, hang lanterns or string lights. Solar-powered lighting is a sustainable choice.
- Multifunctional Pieces:
Choose multipurpose pieces of furniture with concealed storage to keep your terrace tidy. A seat with storage, for instance, can accommodate pillows and gardening equipment.
- Mirror Illusion:
Hang a mirror to reflect light and create the appearance of a larger room. It can expand the feeling of a cramped terrace.
- Herb Garden:
Small herb gardens can be planted in pots or vertical planters. This adds greenery and fresh herbs for cooking.
- Colour Scheme:
To make the room appear harmonious and less congested, stick to a single colour scheme.
- Privacy Screens:
Use bamboo screens, or curtains to create a sense of privacy and separation from neighboring areas.
- Art and Decor:
Hang outdoor-friendly artwork or decor items to personalise your space.
These are some of the terrace wall decoration ideas.
Keep in mind that in tiny places, less is often more, so try to prevent congestion. You may turn your tiny terrace into an attractive and useful hideaway by fusing these concepts.
