Yesterday, I read that the kitchen may be the dirtiest room in our homes. This wasn’t a surprise to me. We use it for food preparation, and where there is food, there is bacteria. That’s why cleaning and disinfecting your countertops is important. Knowing how to disinfect kitchen countertops helps prevent the spread of food-borne diseases while protecting your counters.

Using improper methods can lead to countertop damage or the spread of germs. Here is what you should know about the most effective and safest way to clean your countertops.

How to Clean Kitchen Countertops: General Method

Make a mixture of dishwashing liquid and warm water and dampen a clean microfiber cloth in it. Wipe your counters properly after each use. Replace the microfiber cloth regularly to prevent the spread of germs through the microfiber cloth. Every type of countertop material would be able to withstand this regular cleaning method.

Make sure you don’t allow the spills to sit on your counter, as some liquids may etch or stain the surface, particularly if your counter is crafted from granite. Acidic liquids such as lemon juice and dark liquids such as red wine are particularly damaging to natural stone, as they can etch the surface and lead to staining.

Sanitise the counter

Sanitising your countertop helps kill the bacteria and germs that can lead to deceases. As per the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), you can use isopropyl rubbing alcohol at a concentration of a minimum of 70 perecnt for disinfecting certain surfaces. Diluting rubbing alcohol to a concentration of less than 70 percent could reduce its effectiveness, so do not mix your rubbing alcohol with water.

Steps to Disinfect Countertops:
  • Spray your counter with isopropyl rubbing alcohol

  • Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe the counter

  • After that, use a dry microfiber cloth to dry your counter

  • Do not spray counters with rubbing alcohol if they have been shellacked or painted.

This is how to clean and disinfect kitchen countertops.
