1. The first step is to figure out the kind of knob your door has. There are mainly four types: entrance or keyed entry knobs, dummy door knobs, privacy door knobs and passage door knobs. 

2. Once you are sure about the knob type, get a replacement door knob. 

3. Now, identify the location of the screws in your existing knob. Several knob mounts are made to conceal the screws. Check the base, tip and along the sides for an opening. 

4. If you see a small pinhole or slot instead of conventional screw holes, this is an indication that the knob has a hidden lever.

5. Hold the doorknob, use a screwdriver and turn anticlockwise to unscrew the knob with standard hex-head screws.

6. If your knob comes with a pinhole or a small slot opening, take a flathead screwdriver to push it inward. You can alternatively grab a small pin or paperclip if the screwdriver is too big for the job.

7. Once you loosen the screws, pull on the doorknob till it pops out of place or gets detached from the base, called the rose.

8. If the rose is still on your door, you need to remove it separately.

9. Wedge a pin or the screwdriver’s tip under the small opening between the rose and the door’s surface.

10. Pry it off gently or pull and twist it away from the door.
