When transferring property through a will, follow these steps:

  1. Inheritance: If you inherit a house, understand that a will alone cannot transfer ownership. It only takes effect after the owner’s death.

  2. Deed Change: To truly become the legal owner, change the property deed. A house deed is a legal document that transfers ownership from one person to another. Ensure the deed reflects your name as the rightful owner.

  3. Process:

    • Probate

      : If the property distribution follows the terms of the will, it goes through probate. After probate, you become the owner.

    • New Deed

      : File a new deed with the county Register of Deeds Office to update the title.
