How to do aarti at home?

I have always believed that doing aarti at home is a beautiful and spiritual way to connect with my deity. It is a time for me to express my devotion, gratitude, and love. This is what I teach my children too. I have also taught them how to take aarti. I can help you too in understanding it.

How to perform aarti at home?

To do aarti at home, I usually follow these steps:

1. I prepare the aarti thali by placing a lamp, incense sticks, and flowers on it. I also added a bell, conch shell, and peacock feather.

2. I light the lamp and incense sticks.

3. I ring the bell or blow the conch shell to start the aarti.

4. I sing the aarti hymn that is appropriate for the deity I am worshipping. I sing the hymn with devotion and love, and I focus on the deity as I move the aarti thali in a circular motion in front of them.

5. I offer the flowers to the deity.

6. I ring the bell or blow the conch shell to end the aarti.

I find that doing aarti at home is a very peaceful and calming experience. It helps me to focus on my deity and to express my devotion in a meaningful way.

My father has a habit of getting up at 4 in the morning and bathing in ice cold water. He is ready by 5 AM and starts with the pooja and aarti rituals. I remember him doing that every single day without any failure for as long as I have lived. I on the other hand just know about this routine but very little about how to do aarti at home. It was during the COVID 19 restrictions that I had to take over the ritual as my father was in quarantine. I asked him how to make aarathi and how to perform it. He gave me step by step instructions, I can share the same with you.

I remember him knowing all types of aarti. He taught me how to do aarti at home with camphor in detail, I shall give you a list of items you’ll need and then the whole process.

You need the following to make offerings to God:

• Flowers: Mogra, Jasmine or Lotus

• Incense stick

• Camphor

• Lamp (jyot)

This is the process of performing aarti that my father told me:

• First light the lamp, incense stick and camphor

• Now blow the conch (if you have any)

• Now you can proceed to sing the aarti. I worship Goddess Lakshmi and Saraswati so I sing their aarti

• My father said that if you are performing the aarti you must do it with your heart and sing it in a melody for positive reinforcement

• You can choose to clap your hands while singing the aarti

• You can move the aarti plate in a clockwise direction.

• Once you are done reciting the aarti say your jaikaras and bow your head in front of the God

• Now offer flowers and apply tika on your forehead with your middle finger (I was told that if you are applying gandh on God or Goddesses, you must use your ring finger)
