I think one of the most popular water-based paints for interior home surfaces is distemper. It is mostly used on surfaces such as walls and ceilings. But not many people know how to use distemper paint.

I can tell you that applying distemper paint is similar to applying colour wash or whitewash. I recently used distemper on my walls, so I can tell you the process of distempering in a detailed and step-by-step manner.

How to Apply Distemper Paint on Wall?

Step-1. Surface Preparation
  • If you are applying distemper on freshly plastered surfaces, then let them cure completely before painting them.

  • Make use of a putty knife or wire brush to remove any loose particles.

  • After that, use a dry cloth to wipe the entire area clean.

  • If you are applying distemper on an already painted surface, then use a putty knife or wire brush to remove any loose paint particles before applying the distemper.

  • Use sandpaper to give the old surface a thorough rubdown. After cleaning the entire surface, let it dry completely.

  • Seal the openings and gaps.

  • Use the sandpaper to sand the wall.

This was the first step on how to use distemper paint on wall.

Step-2. Application of Wall Putty
  • Before using wall putty, apply one coat of primer and let it cure for a whole night.

  • The first coat of wall putty should be applied vertically, from "bottom to top."

  • Let it dry for at least six to eight hours.

  • Use sandpaper to gently wipe the surface to remove any loose particles and uneven areas once the initial coat of wall putty has dried.

  • Next, put on a second layer of wall putty.

  • Give the surface eight to twelve hours to dry thoroughly. Use sandpaper to lightly massage the surface to remove any unevenness once the second coat has completely dried.

Step-3. Application of Primer Coat and Distemper Paint
  • Using a brush or roller, apply the first coat of primer, then let it dry. Apply the second coat of primer and let it dry for eight to twelve hours after the first coat has dried.

  • According to the manufacturer's recommended dilution ratio, dilute the paint.

  • Using a brush or roller, apply the first coat of distemper paint, and let it cure for at least 12 to 16 hours.

  • Apply the second coat after that, and let it dry overnight.
