I live in Mumbai. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated here with full devotion and enthusiasm. Every day, we worship the idol during the morning and evening. At the time of Bappa’s arrival, the arrangements made are huge. So, if you want to know how to do Ganpati puja at home. Here is all you need to know.

How to do Ganesha pooja at home: Preparations

I am assuming that you are looking to perform the puja for the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi.

  1. Begin by cleaning your home entirely. This is considered a welcome sign for the lord. If you have a temple at your home, you can decorate it with flowers and lights.

  2. I would advise you to bring home a clay idol of lord Ganesha. It is environment friendly and you can immerse (visarjit) the idol in a plant at your house.

  3. Offer flowers, durva, modaks and karanji to the idol after placing him on top of a new saffron or an orange cloth.

How to perform Ganesh puja at home

  • Place the idol on a raised platform such as a throne (singhasan). Chant the prayers and mantras before keeping the idol in your temple or on a throne.

  • Wash his feet with holy water and then make panchamrit to bathe the ideal.

  • Now, keep five flowers in front of Lord Ganesha’s feet. After doing so, bestow padya and samarpan at the ideal’s feet.

  • At last, bathe the idol again with holy water and offer Lord Ganesha a new set of clothes.

  • Now offer Ganesh ji with chandan, durva, sindoor, garland and naivedyam.

  • You can do the Ganesh Chaturthi’s sixteen rituals pooja by calling a pandit at your residence.

  • Chant the aarti “Jai Jai Ganesh, jai Ganesh, jai Ganesh deva”.

  • Lord Ganesha is fond of modak and ladoo. On the day of this festival, bestow 21 sweets to the idol as bhog.
