How to do Gowri Pooja at home in Kannada?

The Karnataka people practise the Gowri Pooja ritual in order to honour Goddess Gowri, the mother of Lord Ganesha. This fortunate ceremony is typically held during the month of Bhadrapada on the day before the main Ganesh Chaturthi celebration. When I asked my aunty how to do swarna gowri pooja at home, she said that there are many procedures and rituals involved in doing this pooja. Moreover, we perform this ritual in a very basic manner that I shared below. 

Steps to perform Swarna Gowri pooja at home

Bhuvaneswari has already mentioned the steps to do the Swarna Gowri pooja very well. Let’s check out the method that I followed below. But, before that, check out the list of items I used to bring to perform this ritual.

• Clean up the house and add flowers, banana leaves, and traditional Rangoli patterns to the puja area.

• Decorate the idol with flowers, gems, and turmeric paste in addition to a traditional cloth.

• Pray, do aarti, after presenting the Goddess with different prasad or fruits and devotional objects like blouse pieces, bangles, eye kohl, and other cosmetics.

• Chant religious mantra 108 times after lighting incense sticks.

• Finally, the delivery of prasadam to all present devotees marks the end of the event.

A rich and peaceful existence would be ensured by adhering to the above steps and making sincere prayers. This pooja strengthens the cultural identity of the people of Karnataka while also bringing spiritual joy.

A significant ritual performed in the state of Karnataka is called Gowri Pooja. It is celebrated to honour Goddess Gowri, who is admired as the embodiment of purity, courage, and knowledge. By performing this pooja at home, one not only gets blessings and wealth but also receives cultural appreciation and a sense of spiritual devotion. How to Perform Gowri Ganesha Pooja?

This year, Swarna Gowri pooja is falling on the 18th of September. Perform the pooja as mentioned below:

• The house must be fully cleaned and purified before the pooja can begin. 

• Take a bath in the early morning.

• Married women or young girls must dress up nicely.

• Choose a spot that is tidy and serene to start the ritual.

• Banana stems and leaves can be utilised for creating a humble temporary shrine.

• To create an auspicious atmosphere, decorate the place with flowers, mango leaves, rangoli, and traditional designs.

• Gather the necessary puja samagri, which includes an image or statue of Goddess Gowri, turmeric powder, kumkum, sandalwood paste, fruits, betel leaves or tulsi, and so on as mentioned by Aahan above.

• Place the Gowri Ganesha idol on a bed of akshat.

• Decorate the idol with kumkum and turmeric, and present fresh flowers and fruit. 

• After all the preparations are finished, start the pooja by asking Lord Ganesha for his blessings. It is traditional to worship Ganesha first because Gowri is his mother. 

• Carry out the Gowri Pooja by reciting the mantra as mentioned below:

ஓம் ஸ்ரீம் க்லீம் ஐம்ஹ்ரீம் நமோ பகவதி

ஸர்வார்த்த ஸாதகி, ஸர்வலோகவசங்கரி,

தேவி ஸௌபாக்ய ஜனனி, ஸ்ரீம் ஹ்ரீம்

ஸம்பத் கௌரி தேவி, மம ஸர்வ

ஸம்பத்ப்ரதம் தேஹி குருகுரு ஸ்வாஹா

I have heard about the Swarna Gowri Vratham procedure from my friends. The pooja is performed on the eve of the Ganesha Chaturthi festival and on the 13th day of Tadiga in the month of Bhadrapada. The process of performing the puja differs from one geographical location to another. I will share the basic process below. 

Puja samagri include rice, nuts, jaggery mold, togaribela, wheat or semolina, uddi bela, Akshathe coin, kumkum, and turmeric. You will need genetic puja items such as diya, thali, matchsticks are needed as well.

• Men and women alike can participate in the puja after completing the Gowri pooja procedure - preparations. New clothes are worn by the worshippers. 

• An idol of Mangal Gauri, an urn and a mask is kept. A pillar of banana plants, a swag of mango trees, flowers, fruits and various snacks are kept as well. 

• In some places, the house and puja room are decorated with flowers, fairy lights and rangoli. 

• Sweet and crunchy snacks, tambula, obgattu, payasa, huggi/chitranna, bajji, kosambari, fruit-hampalu, coconuts are kept as offerings. 

• Once, all the people have assembled. Aarti is performed with complete devotion with a ghee lamp, camphor and candle.

• A new sari is given to the idol of Goddess Gauri as the Devotees sing Mangala Gauri songs. 

• Certain devotees prefer to recite Mangala Gauri mantras throughout the night to appease the Goddess. 

• Five types of pulses, five types of vegetables, five types of fruits, clothing, and beauty ornaments are given as gifts.

• At the time of the discharge and dissolution of Anna Ganesha, the idol of Gauri is dissolved as well. Milk and rice are offered to the deity. 

• In the end, prasad and offerings are distributed amongst all the family members.

Swarna Gowri Vratham is performed by married women for the longevity and good health of their husbands. Performing this Vrat is considered very auspicious and said to be highly meritorious. • On this day, female members of the family wear traditional clothes and make an idol of Gowri using turmeric (known as Arishinadagauri) for the pooja. You can also buy ready-made idols of Goddess Gowri and Lord Ganesha from the market.

• After that, decorate a Mandap with flowers and mango leaves, the Arishinadagauri with flower garlands and Vastra, and a silver Kalasha with kumkum and turmeric. Also, take a vessel and fill it with water, and add Akshathe coin, kumkum, and turmeric to it.

• Now, decorate the inner rim of Kalasha with betel leaves and smear a coconut with Kumkum and turmeric on the mouth of the pot.

• Draw a rangoli before keeping the Kalasha on a tray or plate and spread uncooked rice on it.

• Now, mount the Arishinadagauri on a plate decorated with flowers.

• Next, the female members of the family tie a ‘Gauridaara’ to their right wrists.

• As is customary, worship Lord Ganesha's idol first and then begin with Gowri ashtotra, read or narrate the story of Gowri, perform the ‘Mangalarathi’ and seek the blessings of Goddess Gowri. This is all about the Swarna Gowri Vratha Pooja Vidhana.
