How to install hardwood floors?

For best hardwood flooring installation you will require:

  • hardwood

  • modular porch system kit

  • wood putty

  • vapour barrier paper

  • pneumatic flooring package

  • nail set

  • staple gun

  • drill bits

  • hammer

  • tape measure

  • pry bar

  • chop saw

  • table saw

  • ear protection

  • safety goggles

  • chalk line

How to do hardwood flooring yourself : Step by step guide:

  1. Check what type of hardwood pieces and board widths you want for the room.

  2. Measure the length and breadth of the room and multiply for square footage. Purchase 10-15% extra boards for cutting mistakes.

  3. See the subfloors and the minimum requirement should be a 3/4" plywood subfloor. There should have been no squeaks on the floor. If there are squeals then the joist where the squeak has appeared.

  4. Take out the strips of vapour barrier paper. You should let 4" overlap and staple securely to the subfloor. Mark the baseboards where the joists are situated.

  5. Install the wood from the longest unobstructed wall. Start removing the shoe moulding and snap a chalk line 3/8" from the baseboard.

  6. Drill potholes to the tongue of the boards and nail the rolls till you find clearance for pneumatic nail guns.

  7. Start cutting the baseboards and choose a piece that will fit. Leave at least 10 to 12 inches and cut the baseboard. 

  8. Remove the shoe mouldings from the room and putty. Also, use wood putty that matches the floor.
