How to do Janmashtami puja at home?

Like most Hindu households, Krishna Janmashtami is keenly observed in my home as well. We worship Krishnavatara or the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu with great respect, adoration, and love. We celebrate this holy and happy event with ardent devotion. Let me tell you how to do Janmashtami puja at home.

• Clean and decorate your house one day before Janmashtami.

• On the day of Krishna Janmashtami, you should set up the puja altar in the puja room or the main hall if you’re planning for an elaborate puja.

• Lord Krishna’s idol is the central attraction of the Krishna Janmashtami puja. You can use the regular picture or idol you have in your puja room or you can purchase a new picture or idol. Depending on the Krishna idol’s material, you can plan for a holy bath or can just decorate it with ornaments, clothes, and flowers.

• You can also draw the little footsteps leading from the entrance to the puja room. This will symbolically represent Lord Krishna’s little feet bringing him into your home to bless the attendees. It is believed that Krishna’s visit to every house during the puja fills the house with happiness and prosperity. This is how to perform Janmashtami puja at home.

• Light the lamp and offer incense to the idol or picture of Lord Krishna. After that, apply Kumkum and Chandar and offer special homemade prasad to Lord Krishna. You can also offer butter, ghee, curd, milk-based sweets, and other milk products.

• Sing songs and chant some mantras and shlokas related to Lord Krishna. Conclude the puja after waving camphor. Give the prasad to all the guests as a mark of Krishna’s blessings.
