After my marriage early this year, I decided to perform shivratri pooja but I had no idea about it. My mother-in-law helped me with everything, and that is when I learned how to do puja on shivratri. A lot of rules need to be followed if you really want to perform the pooja ardently. However, you do not need to go to a mandir if you have a shiv murti in your house. Just learn how to do maha shivaratri pooja at home and perform the pooja in your house only. I loved performing the pooja, and like my in-laws, I too have now become an ardent shiv bhakt.

How to perform maha shivaratri pooja at home?

Shivaratri is celebrated on the 14th day of the dark fortnight of Phalguna month. It usually falls in late February or early March. The rituals differ from one bhakt to another, but here is the usual process:

  • Make yourself clean early in the morning. Take a bath and make sure to wear clean clothes.

  • Set up the mandir or pooja area by placing the idol or image of Lord Shiva along with a Shiv Linga.

  • Decorate the area with flowers, diyas, leaves, fruits and more.

  • Offer Lord Shiva fruits, milk, honey and other favourite elements of Shiva.

  • Chant the mantra: Om Namah Shivaya, Mahamrityunjaya Mantra or even the Shiva Chalisa.

  • Perform Abhishek by pouring milk/water/honey over the Shiva Linga.

  • Conclude the puja by performing the aarti. Light the lamp and wave it in front of Lord Shiva.

So this is how to do shivaratri prayer at home. Do note that during shivratri, you should not drink water or have any food. But if you feel it will be too much, have water, consume fruits and sweets. Avoid eating any grain-based food like rice, wheat, or other such foods. I hope you have understood how to do puja on shivratri. It will be best to ask a pandit ji to guide you initially.

My mother is an ardent Shiv Bhakt. We always have a grand pooja during Mahashivratri. So, I can help you understand how to do Mahashivratri puja.

You must already know that during Chaturdashi Tithi, Krishna Paksha (the fourteenth day of the waning phase of the lunar cycle), in the Phalguna or Magha months, Maha Shivratri is observed (as per the Purnimant or Amavasyant calendars, respectively). The Lord and his wife, Parvati, celebrated their wedding anniversary on this auspicious day. It's interesting to note that it was also the day that Mahadev's Linga form initially manifested. Therefore the importance. By keeping a day-long fast and engaging in rites like Abhishek, devotees honour Mahadev.
