• I then use til (sesame seeds) and Amla (Indian gooseberry) and take a holy bath.

• I put on some fresh clothes, apply vermillion, and put on new bangles.

• I proceed to the banyan (Vat) tree and begin the puja by offering ganga jal.

• I then present the tree with flowers, rori, and akshat.

• I offer the prasad (which usually consists of apple, brown chana, banana, cucumber, and candies) to the tree.

• I placed fresh sets of bangles, bindis, sindoor, and simple red clothing next to the tree. These items I used to take up for me after finishing the puja.

• Next, I do the puja by chanting the katha while lighting diyas in front of the tree. The katha is available online.

• I wrap sacred thread in colours of red and yellow around the trunk of the Vat tree.

• I thank the god and offer the gangajal one last time to complete the pooja.

How to do Vat Purnima Puja at home?

• If you as a woman follow this fast, then you must take a bath in the early hours of the morning and wear fresh clothes.

• You can use bangles and sindoor for your shringaar. Some women also prefer applying henna on their hands and dressing in ornate jewellery on special occasions.

• Then you have to perform puja under a banyan tree during the shubh muhurat of the day. In the step of the ritual, you have to create Satyavan and Savitri idols and present fruits and other items. 

• After that, you have to give gifts to the banyan tree of water, rice, flowers and some unique foods prepared for the occasion.

• Then you have to perform parikrama while tying the yellow and red thread around the tree trunk after the puja is finished. 

• You can then end the day's puja by reciting or hearing the tale of Satyavan and Savitri. Then, prasad is given out to everyone.

I have seen my mother conduct the Vat Savitri Pooja over the past few years. According to the Hindu calendar, Savtri Puja is celebrated on Amavasya of Jyeshtha month. Amavasya can be either no moon day or full moon day. In my answer, I will share the process of celebrating Savitri puja at home. 

• On the day of the pooja, wake up early and take a bath.

• Make sure the clothes you will wear during the puja are clean.

• Cook the prasad. The prasad will include 24 pooris and fruits.

• Arrange the prasad on a plate or carry it in your pallu.

• Take the prasad, haldi, and kumkum to the Banyan tree pot. 

• Keep 12 puris on the base of the banyan plant as prasad. 

• Make swastika near the potted plant 

• Light dhoop, deep, agarbatti.

• Tie dhagga(kachcha sooti dhaga) around the plant trunk by going around the Banyan plant in circle.

• After each round, keep a grain of chana near the plant.

• As you go through the plant/tree, chant prayers.

• Take 12 rounds around the tree.

• Either sit or stand before the tree and offer prayer.

• Read Vat Savitri Vrat Katha and ask Savtri God for blessings. 

• Take blessings of elders and other married women. 

• Post the puja, you can break your fast.
