One of the ways to fix the loose screw is to repair the drywall and repaint the surface. The most common cause of screw and nail popping is the shrinkage in the lumber behind the drywall. This happens due to high moisture content in the lumber. We had this problem a few months ago, and we decided to get it fixed by a professional. So, I am sharing some tips on how to fix a loose screw in drywall.

How to Fix Loose Screw Hole in Drywall?

If the screws or nails are popping out of your walls, one of the reasons could be that the drywall is not properly secured in the frame. Either you can insert new fasteners in an undamaged spot to reattach the drywall, or you can repair the entire drywall. Our contractor suggested repairing it, so I am sharing the steps that I know on the same.

  1. First of all, he removed the loose pieces and filled in the hole with a spackling compound.

  2. Then, he applied the compound with a drywall knife across the wall to smooth the entire surface. After this, he installed new screws and then repeated the filling process to cover the screws.

  3. After some time, he re-applied two layers of compound. It’s necessary to get a complete coverage of the screws.

  4. As a next step, he used sandpaper to sand the dried compound. You have to use a fine sandpaper to avoid removing huge chunks of compound.

  5. Finally, he repainted the surface to hide the drywall compound and give the surface a smooth finish.

In this way, we were able to fix our loose screws. The steps aren’t difficult, but it requires more than just driving the fastener back into the wall. For permanent results, it’s better to consult a professional who can seamlessly repair your drywall.
