I noticed an unsightly milky white film on my wooden furniture one afternoon, something I had never seen before. I knew something wasn’t quite right with the finish. After doing some research, I realised this was called blushing on wood. So to know how to fix blushing on wood, I decided to call in a professional painter to help me out.
How Do You Remove Blush From Wood?
The professional painter explained that blushing happens when moisture gets trapped under the finish, which leads to that cloudy appearance. It’s common when the wood is exposed to humidity or moisture during or after applying a finish. He shared a couple of simple ways to tackle the issue and suggested I start by trying a fresh coat of the same finish I had used previously.
Try a Fresh Coat: The first thing the painter did was apply a thin, even layer of the same finish directly over the affected area. This helps to dissolve the trapped moisture and remove the milky appearance. The finish started to settle in nicely, and the blushing was barely noticeable.
Light Sanding: In case the fresh coat didn’t work, he suggested lightly sanding the surface with fine-grit sandpaper to remove the top layer of the finish. After sanding, a new coat of the same finish should be reapplied. Sanding helps to eliminate any remaining trapped moisture.
Control Environment: He also emphasised the importance of controlling the temperature and humidity of the room where I was working. These factors play a significant role in how the finish dries, and improper conditions can contribute to blushing.
Other Considerations:
Blush Eliminator: For severe cases of blushing, the painter mentioned that using a blush eliminator product might help. These are designed to address more stubborn blushing, but I didn’t need to go that route.
Stripping and Refinishing: If the finish was severely damaged or if blushing persisted, stripping the old finish and completely refinishing the wood might have been necessary. Thankfully, we didn’t need to do that.
