Hey,

When you switch from a wood-burning chimney to a gas chimney, you need to install a fresh chimney liner. The flashing needs to be changed according to the type of fuel used in the chimney. Take a look below to read tips I've gathered on my journey to replace chimney flashing.

How to fix chimney flashing?

  • Clean the existing flue and inspect the status of the mortar joints.

  • With a flashlight figure out if the chimney has any bends or restrictions 

  • Measure the length and dimensions of the chimney. This measurement will be used to determine the dimensions of the liner needed.

  • Flatten the liner on the surface of the roof and fasten the liner to a hose clamp. 

  • Lay down the insulation blanket on the ground.

  • Centre the liner in the centre and wrap the insulation blanket around it

  • Fix the liner with the adhesive of your choice

  • Position all the connectors to the liner 

  • Seal the crown of the chimney and other gaps with silicone caulking

Ready-made DIY kits (DIY Chimney Liner Kits) for repair flashing around chimney have been introduced in the market. If you wish to challenge yourself, you can purchase the kit and undertake the DIY. All the components required will be given with the kit. 

Chimney flashing repair depends on the following :

  • Size and dimensions of the chimney 

  • Condition of the chimney 

  • Labour available 

  • Roof pitch and age of the roof
