I don't think it makes any sense to call a painter every time you see a knick or settlement crack on your wall. I ended up picking up tips and tricks from youtube. I would advise you to carefully read my tips on how to fix settlement cracks in drywall. I'm sure your wall will end up looking brand new.

Before, you learn methods on how to fix wavy drywall on a budget. Make sure you have basic tools and materials in your arsenal. You will need the following :

  • electronic stud finder

  • hacksaw

  • pry bar

  • tape measure

  • drill/driver

  • carpenter's square

  • razor knife

  • string

  • drywall

  • screws and/or nails

  • drywall tape — paper or fibreglass

  • pre-mixed joint compound

  • 100- to 120-grit sandpaper

  • cloth or rag

How to fix drywall seams? Small Cracks (smaller than 1/2 inch)
  • If the seam is cracked, you can patch a thin layer of drywall spackling compound.

  • With a small putty knife, spread the joint compound in an even layer over the seam/ crack.

  • Once the portion is dried, sand it with 100- to 120-grit sandpaper.

  • To match the portion to the rest of the wall, paint the surrounding area.

Large Cracks (larger than 1/2 inch)
  • With a utility knife, cut a 1/4- to 1/8-inch deep hole to remove loose drywall.

  • With a taping knife, spread an even layer of drywall mud over the cracked seam.

  • If needed, apply another layer.

  • With 100- to 120-grit sandpaper, sand the drywall until it's visibly smooth.

  • Remove dust with a cloth or rag

  • Paint the patched area in the same shade as the surrounding wall.
